Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

Bottle. Pours a clear reddish-brown color with a medium off-white head. Some lacing. Aroma of cinnamon, ginger, and maybe even some pumpkin to it. Smells a little like pumpkin pie. Mouthfeel is slightly above-average. Flavor is pretty sweet, with ginger playing a large role in the taste. Hints of cinnamon and brown sugar are also present. Nothing special, but drinkable. One bomber is plenty for me.

Bottle, 65cl. Dark amber colour with a tan head. Very spicy aroma with notes of ginger, cinnamon & cardemom. Roasted taste with cardamom notes. Strange but pretty nice.

This had some spice. Dark brew. I didn’t notice the honey or the orange zest, but maybe it added to the overall texture of this beer. This did feel like a liquid cake in many ways. I really enjoyed this beer. It made me want to be left with only a case of this stuff on a antarctic island.

Deep cola coloured brown body with a thinnish tan head. Aroma of raisins, nuts, roasted malt and a very light spiceyness. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong spicey flavours in the taste, coupled with a good dose of malts and that nuttiness that doesn’t stop. Aftertaste shows more of the spices, a lot of alcohol and some good malt backbones. Overall, a decent beer - a bit strong for the season, and a lot of nuts...but not bad at all. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia on 30 November 2007.

22 oz bomber. Pours a pure garnet with pathetic attempt at a head, left almost entirely without carbonation. Mild toffee, spruce almond nose; nothing leaping out. nutty brown sugar flavor citrus zest, prickly wooden hop finish. Ginger astringency. tastes like a watered down barleywine.

Savannah, Ga. - Habersham Beverage Warehouse, 22 oz bomber. Dark copper, murky pour, light khaki head - dissipates quickly. Raisiny aroma, some moist pipe tobacco, wisp of chocolate. Flavor has some chewing tobacco, raisins, some molasses, and a minty undertone. Finishes just slightly boozy. Sticky mouthfeel. Good belly warmer.

Bottle. A great winter ale. Heavy notes of spice and a nutmeg and oak taste. Full body, yet not filling. Small hints of ginger are present.

A quality beer with a flavor that doesn’t suit me. I can still recognize the quality however. The aroma has ginger and nutmet. Some sugar in the flavor, cloves, more nutmeg and ginger. The spices are strong and prominent, but when combined with the sugar, the beer is a bit cloying.
