Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

A quality beer with a flavor that doesn’t suit me. I can still recognize the quality however. The aroma has ginger and nutmet. Some sugar in the flavor, cloves, more nutmeg and ginger. The spices are strong and prominent, but when combined with the sugar, the beer is a bit cloying.

aroma is that ol familiar yeast/butt smell. Dark amber color, with pretty and smooth beige head that coats the sides of the glass. Has both spiced and belgian flavors.

Dark brown color with a fairly large head. Strong aroma of ginger, followed by an even stronger flavor of ginger. The cloves stand out, but the rest of the spices kind of mingle and muddle into the background. A little sweet caramel. Not bad, but definitely must like ginger to enjoy this beer.

Sampled from 22-oz bomber at Cellar’s Wine & Spirits in St Paul, MN - shared by joebrew. Pours a semi-clear dark amber brew with a decent light tan head. Aroma of Holiday spice of nutmeg, cloves, some cinnamon, and caramel malt. Flavor is medium to full bodied, sweet- spiced with low carbonation. Flavor taste included dark caramel malt, some gingerbread, nutmeg and molasses. Finish has a floral hoppy and Holiday spice aftertaste. Bring on the Christmas beers!

Bomber. Pours a very pretty dark amber with a light tan head. Smooth mouthfeel and strong spice flavors. Really thick aftertaste. Like a gingerbread house in a bottle; the spices quickly become overpowering. It’s over-spiced, but it’s still a nice winter warmer and would be a great treat at the Christmas party.

Pours a real nice Medium roast like brown, with a nice light tan head. Very spicy nose with a good dose of nutmeg, cinnamon, and a hint of ginger accentuate a very light sweet citrus hop aroma. Very full bodied, and low carbonation. There is an almost smoked meat like profile as well as some nutmeg cinnamon, mollases, and a light floral hoppiness. Very unique, but nice.

A slightly sour aroma with some astringency. Light brown to light amber with nice lacing. A somewhat astringent and sour flavor with strawberry in the background.

22 oz bottle. Pours a deep clear amber in color. Aroma is spicy with ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, and caramel malt. Taste is medium to full bodied with alot of caramel, and pretty spicy, cinnamon, nutmeg, Finishes sweet and spicy. A bit too much spice for me, just can’t personally get into this one although it is very clean and well done.
