Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

Wild aroma, spicy with nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves up front, ginger if you focus. Brown sugar. Flavor kinda weird. Herbal funky, with a strong twang in the finish. Strong nutmeg and ginger on the palate is dusty and borderline repulsive. Strong and nearly un-beerlike. Dark earthy malts are there but you just don’t seem to notice anything but the spices. Gives me a shudder as I continue to make my way through this. Body is thickish, with fluffy carbonation that doesn’t manage to ease the finish on this one. Ruby brown color with smallish head that fades fast, almost no lace.

A toffee-caramel aroma that’s a little malty. This has a complexly changing flavor. It has a light-around-the-edges start but thicker in the middle. I think I taste nutmeg and cloves at the end. Something gives it a grainy finish that doesn’t come from hops. Interesting, but not amazing. Had again and gave a score of 3.2.

This spiced ale pours a deep brown color from a 22oz bottle. Medium sized white foamy head. Aroma is cinnamon, ginger and sweet malts. A medium bodied ale. Malts are fruity and sweet. Hops are earthy and slightly floral. Lots of spices in this beer, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and some clove and coriander. Interesting mix of flavors. It’s most definitely a X-mas beer. Nice soft mouthfeel. Hides the 8.6% alcohol very well. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Hazy dark amber-brown color with a very small head. Malt and spice aroma. Sweet and spicy flavor; the combination of spices give a nice character to it. Cinnamon and ginger come through the most. Definitely a Christmas beer. The spiciness lingers on in the finish. Nice medium body.

(Draught at Oliver Twist, Stockholm) Dark brown, with very little head. Medium body, lots of spices, definitely cinnamon and ginger. Tastes very much like swedish ginger biscuits. A bit on the sweet side for my taste. Very "christmasy". Definitely worth a taste.

Draught. Dark ruby colour, small foamy beige head, lacing. Sweet redwineish fruity nose. Flavour is kind of strange fruity, with hints of olives. Might the the clove combines with something else which makes the strange mix. Long spicy aftertaste. Christmassy indeed.

Draught
Dark ruby, small off-white head. Spicey strong aroma (cloves). Sweetish, christmasy spicey (clove also here) flavor. Long spicey aftertaste. Quite ordinary XMas-brew.

Dark amber color with no head - just suds on top with no head really. Aroma is great with cedar and ginger. Taste is very seasonal - ginger, cinnamon, malt and hardly any hops at all. Very seasonal and great taste. Just think Tasty Beverage when you drink it not Beer and it’s great.
