Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

22 oz. bottle poured a deep dark brown color with a thick heavy light tan head that kept a nice thin layer. aroma has cinnamon, nutmeg, faint ginger, and lightly sweet honey. mouth feel is a little light and light with low carbonation. the malt in the flavor is mild and there is plenty of spices including cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and mild ginger that i would not have recognized had it not been in the description. I am not sure if the body or the honey is throwing me off but this is hard to get into.

Bottle. Pours a deep mahogany body with a 2 finger off white head. Aroma is strong perfume hop character, cinnamon, ginger, and pepper spice. Light honey and citrus notes. Finishes with a light alcohol and a bit soapy. not a fan.

On tap at the Bocktown, nice place. Fairly dark appearance with a nice creamy head. Barely any aroma, just a relatively clean beery olfactory. Not much if any carbonation on the palate. Taste is a little medicinal in nature. Some fermented fruit background with unidentifyable spices. Lingering alky finish, hangs around for a while. S5L3T4F1O7

Bottle. Pours a clear deep amber with a small off-white head. Aroma of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, honey, sweet malt, and ginger. Taste is the same as aroma with a heavy accent on the spices. Medium mouthfeel with a mild amount of bitterness and smooth alcohol. Im not usually a fan of spiced beers but this one is pretty good.

A dark brown cola looking beer with a small and short lasting light tan head. Not a big aroma but it offers Christmas spices and over ripe fruit. Lots of spices in the flavor such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. It is like drinking a glass of pot pouri. Some decent effervescence and the spices tingle the tongue. Feel is oily. It could use some more character and is slightly above average as a beer.
