Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

Bottle courtesy of fishingnet. Pours a dark brown amber color with a thin off-white head. Aroma is spicy, nutmeg, cinnamon, almost hints of peppermint and phenol. Flavor is sweet and malty with notes of clove, ginger, caramel, honey, heavy on the spices. Generally medium body with a slightly sweet finish.

Sample at December 12, 2008 Beer Club meeting. Medium dark brown color. Small head. Spicy aroma! Reminds me of a spice cake. Light, but a little syrupy. You can actually taste the alcohol a little in this. And the spices... cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon are in your face but not overpowering. Heavy, nice gravity. Love it!

Winter warmer. Spiced, but nothing like the intensity of an Anchor and I like that about this beer. You get the winter taste, the strong ale, the malts, and you can drink more than one. More than one Anchor is like eating fruit cake.

A whiskey colored dark oak amber ale with a 2 inch tan head and a noticeable ginger aroma. Messing lacing. Flavor is barley malt and ginger snap. Aftertaste conjours up a strong reminiscence of Christmas. I am not a big fan of ginger, but this beer has plenty of it and it lingers in the finish.

courtesy of fishingnet Pours amber, beige head Aroma is sugary - honey - loaded with spices and ginger Taste. The ginger reminded me a lot of the bad experience I had with LF Juju ginger beer. Regardless of that, the beer is a fine enjoyable brew Loaded with sweet honey and ginger, cinnamon and other spices. There is plenty of spices to go about here.

22 oz. bottle. Pours a thin tan head, minimal duration over a clear coppery brown body.....nose like a cookie with multiple spice odors including nutmeg, cardamom cinnamon.....tastes initially of malts then the spices come in and almost over power all else, ending with sweetness and finally cinnamon. It is like liquid gingerbread. Mouth feel is pleasant and chewy. The spice is too much.

Bomber at Jerrys. Mahogany with good, creamy tan head / Nose of sweet, spiced malts / Medium to full body, sweet, malty, and moderately syrupy, with good, subtle hop balance and long finish / Flavors of spun sugar, malt, toast, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, orange zest, and ginger / A very successful spice beer, which does taste like a holiday spice cake.
