dkachur (2318), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Dec 5, 2008 22 ounce bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a hazy reddish brown with a 1.5 finger head. Moderate retention and not so great lacing. Pungent aroma of caramel, toffee, citrus and gingery spice. Taste is nutty toffee with several spicy notes. Very subtle hoppiness. Medium bodied. Interesting beer. barleynhops (82), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA Dec 4, 2008 On tap: Very enjoyable brew. The dark golden color is misleading because it has a citrisy, spicy, and unique taste. A little hoppy, but would have enjoyed more of the hops. Jine (889), Nutley, New Jersey, USA Nov 30, 2008 22oz bottle. Nice brew, extremely prominent spices. Not overwhelming in the taste but gave off a distinct (to me) aftertaste of honey or Dijon mustard. Is that good or bad? Not sure. I liked it though. NobleSquirrel (1100), Chicago, Illinois, USA Nov 30, 2008 Tap at Kuma’s. Pours a deep, dark reddish brown, though translucent. minimal head. Nose is actually quite fruity, cinnamon and the orange zest jump out, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was cardamom either. Taste is pretty intense and rich. Sweet and moderately spicy, a hint of ginger and cinnamon but just somehow very rich. Not the easiest drinking, but not a horrible beer, either. lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA Nov 29, 2008 Pours a nice rich dark amber, and mostly clear with a medium to short lived beige head. Smell is sweet pumpkin pie like spices. If I didn’t know it wasn’t a pumpkin beer that’s what I would have guessed it was. Taste is crisp, lightly hoppy and bittered but with a touch of alcohol flavor and pumpkin pie like spice with nutmeg and cinnamon. Medium bodied with soft to medium and slightly crisp carbonation and a dry finish to it. Not a bad winter beer at all. jhagmar (114), Gothenburg, Sweden Nov 29, 2008 Bottle, thanks ekstedt. Reddish brow with an offwhite head. Aroma dominated by spices - orange, cardamom, cloves and cinnamon. Sweet, a bit sticky taste. Smooth mouthfeel, light carbonation. zach8270 (2051), Henrietta, New York, USA Nov 27, 2008 (bottle - 22 oz) Dark red pour with a fluffy tan head. Aroma is very sweet and spicy. Lots of dark malts, cinnamon, clove, gingerbread, and toffee. Flavor is quite spicy as well. The cinnamon and cloves dominate and give way to a sweet and creamy malt middle and a spicy finish of cloves and gingerbread. A bit cloying but quite nice. frankenkitty (1900), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA Oct 23, 2008 Rating for Left Hand XXXmas Ale
A creamy, cream-colored head lasts forever and sheet-laces above a clear yet thick copper body. Festive aromas, clove, licorice, mincemeat, cinnamon stick, prune, golden apple... sweet, spicy & lush. Smooth, sweet malts begin the flavor with a cloy. Dry spicing follows quickly and lingers. A flat, honeyed, syrupy presence does not dissipate the flavors, so they simply ’’hang’’ in the gullet while sugars coat the mouth. I warm up to the package as I get further along the bottle as spices play and linger. But, rather like Christmas itself, this beer’s promises of festivity and joy soon wear out their welcome.
