Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

Grandma's Spice cake here as a beer! Ginger. It wants just a little more body to balance some of the spiciness, but it's a pleasurable kind of beer to have one or two of during the winter months. This one is a little more different than most and worth a try.

Bottle, pours clear mahogany with a lacy beige head. The aroma is the beer equivalent of mulled wine - they’ve definitely got the holiday spices going on. Medium body, low carbonation. The taste is about the same as the aroma. There’s a touch of caramel, but it’s really about the spices. The finish is dry and hot, but not unpleasantly so. I’d probably appreciate this more on a cold night in front of a crackling fire.

From a 22 once bottle purchased at By The Bottle in Vancouver, WA--Deep amber body with a small whitish head. Gritty, nutty, brown sugar nose with lots of hops and sweet stickiness. Nose of sweet Christmas spiciness including cinnamon, nutmeg, honey, brown sugar. pine and clove-esque orange peel yumminess. OMG. Way better than I was expecting by these naysayers. LOL!

On tap @ Brew Kettle: Brown in color with a white head. Aroma, ginger some spice, and some sweet malts. Flavor, a harsh spice to it, some brown sugar, caramel, and some light fruits to it. Not that great.

Pours a nice rich dark amber, and mostly clear with a medium to short lived beige head. Smell is sweet pumpkin pie like spices. If I didn’t know it wasn’t a pumpkin beer that’s what I would have guessed it was. Taste is crisp, lightly hoppy and bittered but with a touch of alcohol flavor and pumpkin pie like spice with nutmeg and cinnamon. Medium bodied with soft to medium and slightly crisp carbonation and a dry finish to it. Not a bad winter beer at all.

A hazed brown pour with good lacing. A spicy aroma of citrus and the flavor of roasted malt and a nice warming that is even and pleasant. It has a good bitter finsih, not overpowering but present. The palate is just a tad thin but overall a good beer.

courtesy of fishingnet Pours amber, beige head Aroma is sugary - honey - loaded with spices and ginger Taste. The ginger reminded me a lot of the bad experience I had with LF Juju ginger beer. Regardless of that, the beer is a fine enjoyable brew Loaded with sweet honey and ginger, cinnamon and other spices. There is plenty of spices to go about here.

22 oz. bottle. Pours a clear coppery red with a moderate linen white head that left a layer of lace after each sip and faded to a film around mid-glass. Very nice aroma of cinnamon, allspice, cloves and brown sugar. The flavor is mostly about the spices with weak caramel malt up front follwed by cinnamon, allspice and cloves. The spices in this beer are more reminiscent of Fall than Winter. A bit one dimensional, but otheriwise a decent brew.
