Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

22 oz bottle. Pours a deep clear amber in color. Aroma is spicy with ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, and caramel malt. Taste is medium to full bodied with alot of caramel, and pretty spicy, cinnamon, nutmeg, Finishes sweet and spicy. A bit too much spice for me, just can’t personally get into this one although it is very clean and well done.

22oz bottle-dark copper with a small fizzy off-white head. big spicy cinnamon and allspice nose with toasted ginger in there as well. flavors are sweet, nice spice and farily one-dimensional on the gingerbread cookie thing. body is nothing speical-went flat pretty quick. long spicy finish with carmel notes in there as well. really a boring spiced winter brew.

Coppery brown, creamy light tan head. Spiced nose of ginger, clove, and nutmeg, with a soft underlying wave of spruce, toast, and even touches of chocolate mint. Flavor is all the above with loads of spiced sweet malt that rounds out with a light citric hop bitterness. Medium to full bodied, medium carbonation, spicy, malty finish. Good X-Mas beer that never seemed too over the the top...

This beer pours a deep dark amber colour. Medium khaki head that leaves scattered lacing. Very enticing aroma of mixed spices, cloves, cinammon and honey. Mouthfeel is smooth, well balanced and full. Taste is very pleasent and a dance of sweet and spicey.

Black tea color with a khaki head. Spiced up smell of cloves, nutmeg, gingerbread cookies. Malty sweet taste with cloves, nutmeg, and ginger are nice but not overpowering here. 12706

bottle. dark grape juice like body with a yellow white head. a great aroma of ginger snaps, corriander or something similar, and oranges. really a great one to dip my nose in. highly spiced flavor with ginger, allspice, pine, caramel. the flavor of christmas cookies and a rich doughy note work amazingly well. spices linger and make me go back for more. orange flavor lies underneath with a thick body and a wonderful sweetness. one of those beers that makes me shake my head in amazement. i really can’t believe how damn good this is. the best "christmas" beer i’ve ever had.

Bomber poured a clear brown with a small, lasting amber head. Aromas of spices, sweet malt and a hint of nuts. Palate was medium bodied, smooth yet crisp. Flavors of spices, maltiness and a hint of nuts with a smootgh, lingering sweet and spicy finish.

Rating for Left Hand XXXmas Ale

A creamy, cream-colored head lasts forever and sheet-laces above a clear yet thick copper body. Festive aromas, clove, licorice, mincemeat, cinnamon stick, prune, golden apple... sweet, spicy & lush. Smooth, sweet malts begin the flavor with a cloy. Dry spicing follows quickly and lingers. A flat, honeyed, syrupy presence does not dissipate the flavors, so they simply ’’hang’’ in the gullet while sugars coat the mouth. I warm up to the package as I get further along the bottle as spices play and linger. But, rather like Christmas itself, this beer’s promises of festivity and joy soon wear out their welcome.
