Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

Clear dark copper with a thin tan quickly fading head. Aroma of ginger, cinnamon, honey and malt. Taste of honey, caramel, brown sugar, ginger, spices, cardamom and a touch of alcohol. The spice mix seems all wrong. Strong honey and spices on the finish and aftertaste.

Loved this Christmas beer, very dark amber, almost brownish color, very little head & what head there was disappeared very quickly, spicy nose, lots of cinnamon, nutmeg, hint of ginger & cloves, nice spicy flavors, more cinnamon & nutmeg in the finish, all-around great seasonal brew

on tap @ papago... dark copper-y brown colored pour with a creamy light tan head. the foam seems pretty determined to stick around and also leaves a bunch of drippy lacing behind. very sweet smelling with brown sugar, a touch of pale molasses, spicy cardamon like earthiness, orange and other sweet fruits. the palate is very brown sugar sweet... normally a bad thing but in this case spiciness and alcohol clean it up quite well enough. pumpkin pie spice numbs the tongue after flavors of molasses, malt and raisins pass by. the finish strikes me as soapy since ginger too often doesn’t translate well. medium body is kept from becoming sticky with help from spice overload and alcohol’s presence. too sweet but not bad...6/3.5/6/3/14/3.3

Bottle from S&K Beverage in Plano, TX. Pours a clear deep brown-red with beige head. Aroma of ginger, cinnamon, malt, and fruit. Flavor has malt, is sweet, alcohol, fruit, ginger, cinnamon, clove, exactly what they say. Palate is medium-heavy body with med-high carbonation. Over all, the flavors where WAY too present, in my opinion, a little over done. I liked it and hated it.....But I wouldn’t mind having it again.....in a weird way, almost reminded me of eggnog. This was kinda tricky to rate, but it was like a good winter warmer dessert beer.

22 oz bomber purchased at Spirits RB. Pours a cler yet increadiblly deep dark reddish brown or perhaps brownish red with a large light beige head. Initial aroma of chocolate and cinnamon. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Flavor pretty much in line with the aroma, chocolate and cinnamon. Although this beer isn’t overspiced I’m finding out that I’m not a big fan of the chocolate, cinnamon, nutmeg combo that alot of the winter seasonals seem to be doing. At 8.6% at least I should be able to catch a buzz and mellow out while I try to string the damn Chrsitmas lights inside the tree.

A dark brown cola looking beer with a small and short lasting light tan head. Not a big aroma but it offers Christmas spices and over ripe fruit. Lots of spices in the flavor such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. It is like drinking a glass of pot pouri. Some decent effervescence and the spices tingle the tongue. Feel is oily. It could use some more character and is slightly above average as a beer.

Dark red color. Head disappeared very quickly. Sweet smell, of fruit and spices. Different taste. Lots of dark fruit and cinnamon. Spice flavor really comes through on the finish.
