Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

Dark red color. Head disappeared very quickly. Sweet smell, of fruit and spices. Different taste. Lots of dark fruit and cinnamon. Spice flavor really comes through on the finish.

22 oz bomber purchased at Frugal MacDoogal’s about a year ago. Poured a dark amber/red color with a one finger off white head. The aroma was very spicy with cinnamon and cloves. The flavor was not as malty as I expected. The same spices in the aroma are still very present. This tastes like a pumpkin beer, without the pumpkin finish.

Tap at the Muddy Pig. Rusty orange; clear. Muddled and very sweet aroma of orange peel, cinnamon and honey; drying touches of cloves, cardamom, and pickled ginger. The nuances are each present in their own right but somewhat hard to distinguish or to appreciate within the heavily sweetened pumpkin and carrot cake construct they serve. Strange. Flavors of bubblegum, banana, strong vanilla and creamy cotton candy; spices are less apparent although they glimmer dimly and mysteriously around the edges for the duration; clover and heather honey tends to dominate with a very sticky and restive type of sweetness. Top heavy, but lucidly presented, and cleanly balanced. Smooth and medium bodied with gentle carbonation; soft with a marshmallow and salty spice touch in a loose finish. Surprising; not too messy.

Pours an amber color with a fairly thick head. Winter spices dominate the aroma with nutmeg, ginger, and cinnamon standing out the most. Way too much nutmeg in the flavor with enough ginger to give the impression of bad christmas cookies. Not my thing really.

Had this on 2/9/2004. Aroma reminds me of an apple stout I once brewed, it is a sweet cidery scent. Color is a deep amber with light carbonation and thin head. Taste is rich and cidery. Starting with a full body that turns sharp and goes down with a spicy feel. The finish comes on rich with a spicy sweetness that is backed by an apple cider like taste, this all ends with a bold bitterness that hangs on. Overall I don’t like it, you can drink it but its not much fun. This cider thing has got to go, they really need to rethink this winter brew and come up with something more Stout like. I do not intend to drink this one again unless they change the recipe.

Good for what it is, but as spices do little to get my "elf on" I can only get just so excited. I have more notes on this, but don’t think they’ll add much beyond my liking this is a limited manner.

Clear amber with a thin tan head. Cinnamon, nutmeg, citrus and allspice in the aroma. Strange, steeped spice flavor. Rather still on the palate with lingering nutmeg and clove flavors and some woodiness. Distinct, though not exactly appealing flavors. It is a bit muddy in the finish. Doesn’t come together to good for me.

Bottle at Dellirium Café Göteborg: Hazy deep red colour, nice creamy head. Aroma of citrus, spicy nose, and a hopyness, who is well hidden. Flavor is surprisingly smouth, but have all the idgrediens who was in the aroma.Thin to medioum body, light to medium finish.
