Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

A pretty decent winter brew. Very spicy - cinnamon and nutmeg. Murky-brown aroma, slightly tan head. Decent, mildly sweet aroma. Lots of figs in here. Pleasantly balanced with hops and malts. It really "tastes like christmas".

Pours a watery dark red Color. Aroma of spices and alcohol. Taste of sweet malt and some spices with a big alcohol burn for its ABV.

Growler from the brewpub. Pours light brown with a medium tan head. Heavily spiced aroma of cinnamon, ginger, clove and nutmeg. Cinnamon spice flavor with honey sweetness, ginger, some hop and a touch of alcohol. Pretty good overall.

This was easy to drink and smooth. The spiciness was good and reminded me most of orange peel. Slight creamy, malty mouthfeel. Pours a deep brown/amber color with big tan head. A little thin and quick to finish take a way from the experience.

Winter warmer. Spiced, but nothing like the intensity of an Anchor and I like that about this beer. You get the winter taste, the strong ale, the malts, and you can drink more than one. More than one Anchor is like eating fruit cake.

Dark red amber with a nice white creamy head and big spicy aroma. Flavor is overly sweet and spicy with a big sweet spicy cloying finish.

Hazy, light brown color with a small off white head. Aroma of cheap ketchup and spices(nutmeg, gingerbread). Flavor of the spices dominate, which is too much for me(luckily the ketchup aroma didn’t show up in the flavor). Not that bad, but I wouldn’t try another.
