Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

Medium copper w/a lasting light beige head. Caramel & toasty malt w/a a light cinnamon and ginger spice aroma. Some baked apple fruitiness and nutmeg becomes apparent as it warms as well as hints of alcohol. Malty cinnamon/ginger spice but not as predominant as in the aroma, low fruitiness and a lightly roasty finish and aftertaste. Medium bodied w/ a smooth m/f, low carbonation a warming alcohol. It doesn't seem as highly spiced flavor wise as a typical Christmas beer which is fine by me, but it lacks a little overall character to be a great beer IMHO.

dark red and sharp with ginger and something like a cinnamon accompanyament. bit of sweetness muted by the ginger and clove as this beer is first just spicy. good gravity and off beat and therefore of some interest.

22 oz. brown bomber bottle. No freshness date seen. Poured out a deep reddish brown color, with a faint tan head. The head falls back to a thin ring of foam around the rim of the glass. Aromas are of honey, cinnamon, coriander, orange peel. Flavors are of orange peel, honey, spices, sweet malts. Medium mouthfeel, decent body. Slick on the tongue. Sweet, with a hint of orange peel. Finishes rich, slick, & smooth. About time someone made a decent winter ale. Too bad I could only find one of these treats.

Bottle courtesy of SecretSanta BeerandBlues. Pours a dark brown with a small light brown head. Aroma is rasins, nutmeg, clove, cinnamon, dark malts. Flavor is dark malts, spices, almost like a pumpkinless-pumpkin beer as noted by other raters. Interesting winter brew, I actually enjoyed this one a bit.

Bottle. Pours a clear deep amber with a small off-white head. Aroma of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, honey, sweet malt, and ginger. Taste is the same as aroma with a heavy accent on the spices. Medium mouthfeel with a mild amount of bitterness and smooth alcohol. Im not usually a fan of spiced beers but this one is pretty good.

Bomber. Clear red/copper color with a medium head. Aroma was spicy wassail like with honey, orange and caramel malt.
A very malty and warm brew, toffee and caramel, followed by the honey and spices. Chewy. You’ve gotta try this before you say that you don’t like any Winter Spiced ales.
