Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

Deep red pour with a a thin head. Nice lacing. Aroma of cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper, and molasses. Interesting beer. Lower in hop profile than I like, but sometimes malt heavy beers can be good. Alcohol is hidden well (this years version says 8.5% ABV). This is okay for what it is, but not really my cup of tea. It started out ok but became sickingly cloying after about half the bottle. I had to pour the rest out.

Dark copper color. Starts out with some caramel and cinnamon and then finishes with a burning ginger spice. This is a very spicy brew. I think if you're going to add spices to a beer then do it heavily. It's an allout spice assult.

I thought this beer was decent, but not outstanding. While it has a significant amount of alcohol, I thought the alcohol’s presence in the flavor was a bit overstated. Nontheless, I thought it to be pretty good. This beer poured a brilliant copper color with plentiful amounts of fairly sticky head. It had a very pumpkin-beer-like aroma with lots of nutmeg smell, although it also had a chlorophenol odor of metallic tapwater. Flavor was very much like a number of pumpkin beers I’ve had, but with some bourbon notes and a very pronounced alcohol presence which may have resulted from not a lot of malt character to conceal the alcohol esters. Mouthfeel was dry in nature, but not remarkable. Not bad; I’d recommend it. The pronounced alcohol flavor made me feel like it was winter outside. Having it be 20 degrees and snowing outside when I was drinking it helped too.

I wasn’t a big fan of this. To me seemed to have a huge licorice(sp) aftertaste, and i don’t like licorice.

Christmas spices en masse. Sweet with dades, raisins and maybe a little bit smokiness. Bitterness does not come through until aftertaste. Quite special.

BPW #58 On tap at HopCat. This brew has aromas and flavors that start with a good cinnamon tone on top of roasted malts with notes of candy sugar as well.

Nice spiced offering! Pours flat cola into the glass, with stalactite lacing that cascades from the top of the glass rim. Lots of pumpkin and dry pie spices to the nose... nutmeg dominates, with cinnamon and ginger. Very much a spiced pie (pumpkin) on the tongue. There are so many variables here.... pumpkin, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, dark fruits, orange zest/peel, roasted malt, licorice.... all well-woven together for a complex palate. The finish contains a hint of pumpkin seed, backed by just a kiss of alcohol (well-integrated, by the way). The mouthfeel is medium, with soft carbonation. All-in-all, a very nice spice brew. Went down really, really well for me.
