Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

22oz bottle. Nice brew, extremely prominent spices. Not overwhelming in the taste but gave off a distinct (to me) aftertaste of honey or Dijon mustard. Is that good or bad? Not sure. I liked it though.

Bottle (XXXmas Ale) Pours a dark amber color with minimal beige head. Aroma is very festive, sweet malt, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, clove, citrus. Flavor is sweet, honey, caramel, orange, nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, ginger. Palate is medium bodied, almost no carbonation, overly sweet and spicy, slightly warming. Not very good, lacking in balance, needs help big time.

Bomber. Clear dark brown/copper. Aroma of... yep... gingerbread, and all the familiar spices therein--ginger, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon. A bit of a balsamic note as well. Not quite Chinese dumpling sauce territory fortunately. Flavor is of a more subtle gingerbread malt with some mild hoppiness at the end. For some strange reason I’m picking up a slight fresh lemon juice note underneath. Not too overbearing, sweet or dumpling saucey like I fear from others in this seasonal category. Basically palatable gingerbread-spiced Xmas ale.

22oz bottle with Butters. Pours a light tan head that laces with a dark amber body with ruby highlights. Tastes of ginger, citrus, and some spice. The ginger lingers and is a bit too strong for me.

Nice dark brown color. Translucent in appearance. Nice looking spice/herb/vegetable beer. A nice and sharp pungent beer. The ginger is very pungent. I love the aroma. This spice/herb/vegetable has one of the most pungent aromas. Very nice. Sweet aroma also comes out. This aroma is f’in lovely. A little on the thin side. I wish it had a better palate to carry the spicy flavors. The beer is really good. It surpasses the aroma in strength. I think it would have a better taste if the palate is better. Overall, awesome beer. You should try this.

2005 Bomber. Too much spice all the way around in the flavor, although muted in the aroma. Liquid cake sounds good in theory, but it is sweet and tough to drink for me.

Nice ruby color, off white head, relatively low carbonation. Aroma is yeasty, doughy, like a cookie maybe, with autumn spices like cinnamon and pumpkin. Flavor is yeasty, bread-like and sweet, also like a cookie or pie. Very interesting. Very akin to a good pumpkin ale. Thick mouthfeel. Spices dominate on the finish, which lingers considerably. Very nice beer. More like a fall beer though.
