Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

This dark amber pour smells like rosemary and holly. The flavor is sweet and spicy and is balanced nicely. I enjoyed this holiday beer and will be sure to add it to my list for next winter.

Pours a dark cherry red with small white head. Spicy aroma with alcohol and frit presence. Tastes kind of funky with a mix of spicy pepper, ginger, syrupy cough medicine, dark cherries and alcohol

The scene of a cozy ski lodge on the label of this bomber set the mood for a spiced winter ale tasting. The beer poured out clear boron, and displayed a one finger thick fizzy head. It was a lighter looking than the typical spiced ale, but was quite spicy smelling with assertive spruce, ginger, and cinnamon aromas. Taste was festive, as spices detected via the nose were present in abundant quantities to form an initial spice cake-like crust, on the tongue, which subsequently dissolved into gingerbread like malty body. The texture was airy and soft, and the finish continued with the spices, and ended on a lingering nutmeg note. Some might consider the spicing overdone, as there was not a hefty body to go along with it, but I found it to be pleasantly bold. Worth a try, if you enjoy winter spices.

Draft at Ginger man. Dark w/moderate head. Very little aroma in my glass. Taste was gingery coffeee. Not that successful IMO.

Interesting and better than expected but still not that great. Nutmeg, cinnamon, pumpkin and vegetable flavors dominate. Alcohol is hidden well. Drinkable but 1 and done for me.

Courtesy of Degarth. Amber colored, dark center with lighter edges. 1 finger thick white head, no retention, leaves a foamy layer atop the beer and minimal lacing. Nose of hops, caramel malts, assorted spices, honey, ginger, citrus fruits, cloves and nutmeg. Flavor profile very similar, heavy on the spice and juicy citrus fruits. Good stuff, but there is something I can’t quite put my finger on that keeps it from reaching that next level and being a really good beer. Medium bodied, slightly sticky and very warming. Lengthy, spicy and sweet fruit filled finish, with a wave of hops and astringency at the very end.
