Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

A nicely spiced winter ale. Nutmeg, cloves, ginger, cinnamon all make for a pleasant aroma. Flavor is malty, nice amount of sugar...all with a nice winter spice background. Farily alcoholic, which is covered well. A good beer for those cold winter nights in front of a fire.

Fruity, apricot zest in the nose. A faint aroma of honey very subtle. Dark amber color with a fast moving, diminishing head. Flavor is a little watery. Acidic not very bold. Some zest and spices but mellow. Sweet somewhat bitter finish. Just too blah. Not quite ready for primetime holiday cheer.

Medium brown pour little head. Huge nutmeg and mild malt aroma. The Nutmeg faded within several minutes. Overall "ok" mild spice hints of malt, thin body but ABV well hidden.

Pours cloudy brown with a small to medium tan head. Nose is honey, bitter orange, and clove. Flavor is overwhelming spices, like my wife dropped the spice drawer and mixed all the spices together, then threw it into pasta along with some time of stinky cheese. Palate has an ongoing cinnamon and nutmeg aftertaste. Sorry, not my thing.

2007 version. Poured reddish brown with a thin tan head. Aroma -- Sweet, spicey and maybe some licorace. The taste was heavy on the ginger. Very sweet and thick. Also soem clove and nutmeg. The spices seem to dominate here. A bit unbalanced.

Ginger, cinnamon, and other spices come through in the aroma, decent malt support, plenty of caramel. Gorgeous clear ruby color, minimal head. Nice balance in the flavor - in a lot of spiced beers, especially those that use ginger, the spices can really dominate the other flavors. In this beer, there is solid malt flavor - caramel, honey, biscuit - to compliment the spices, which blend together nicely so that none stand out. Pretty full bodied, smooth. One of the better spiced holiday beers I’ve tried.

Lots of spice detected in this one, although its not overly good. Has kind of a flat aftertaste. Alcohol really isn’t there. Guess its pretty good for the style, but I’ve had better.
