Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

2006 bottle. Head is initially small, frothy/fizzy, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is dark amber. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (cookie), lightly yeasty (dough), with notes of nutmeg, honey, and cinnamon. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. If you like the holiday spices to stand out, this is a perfectly serviceable winter warmer. Pleasant.

Bottle: Deep amber brown with reddish highlights, a small head and good lace. The aroma has notes a carmel, honey, aromatic hops, pipe tobacco, currants, pear, cinnamom, ginger, and nutmeg. The taste has heavy spice qualities throughout with light to moderate levels of dark fruits and subdued bitters. Needs more depth below all those spices, a bit over the top. The feel is crisp and hoilday like for sure with the bitters and spices doing a number on the tongue. I did like this more than expected, wasn’t so spicy I couldn’t drink it...but still could be better balanced.

Sampled from 22-oz bomber at Cellar’s Wine & Spirits in St Paul, MN - shared by joebrew. Pours a semi-clear dark amber brew with a decent light tan head. Aroma of Holiday spice of nutmeg, cloves, some cinnamon, and caramel malt. Flavor is medium to full bodied, sweet- spiced with low carbonation. Flavor taste included dark caramel malt, some gingerbread, nutmeg and molasses. Finish has a floral hoppy and Holiday spice aftertaste. Bring on the Christmas beers!

Poured a clear dark copper color with a small beige head. Huge spicey aroma with cinnamon, nutmeg, and some chocolate. It was sweetness under spice. Chocolatey sweet malt flavor with a spicey middle and finish. There was a ginger burn at the end.

Bomber. Poured a lovely translucent reddish-amber with a short cap of beige head. The aroma picked up cola, honey, and caramel sweetness with black pepper, clove, and cinnamon spicage.. warm, inviting, and holiday-ey. The flavor was along those same lines, with mostly drawn caramel at the core and unbalanced spiciness around the edges (pepper, coriander, and cinnamon.. with cloves right at the back).. perhaps some darker/more complex malt backbone would have supported this better. Medium-bodied and a bit sharp on the palate with the spices.. overall a decent beer.

Bottle (650ml). Shared with blankboy and Dave B, my bottle, via trade with Fyrecrakker05. Poured hazy ruby-mahogany with an average off-white head. Very spicy (pepper, winter spices, cinnamon) aroma, sweety toasty malt, slightly vegetal, noticeable alcohol, floral hops. Taste is extremely, sharply herbal - bitterness mixed with minty sweetness, but finishes quite bitter, wow. Mouthfeel is astringent, lively, long finish. Nice - 3.28?? I like it more than that ...

This spiced ale pours a deep brown color from a 22oz bottle. Medium sized white foamy head. Aroma is cinnamon, ginger and sweet malts. A medium bodied ale. Malts are fruity and sweet. Hops are earthy and slightly floral. Lots of spices in this beer, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and some clove and coriander. Interesting mix of flavors. It’s most definitely a X-mas beer. Nice soft mouthfeel. Hides the 8.6% alcohol very well. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.
