Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

Bottle at Delirium Cafe, GöteborgAmber color, offwhite head. Clove aroma, malty and vanilla notes, creamy and fruity. Clove flavor, malty but also hoppy, quite pleasant with some spices, cinnamon for example. Malty finish with some hops.

Bottled. Clear dark brown colour. Cheese doodles, gingerbread and dill in aroma. Chocolatey backbone in flavour with soft mouthfeel and pretty much hops. Long flavour and medium-full bodied.

Bomber poured a clear brown with a small, lasting amber head. Aromas of spices, sweet malt and a hint of nuts. Palate was medium bodied, smooth yet crisp. Flavors of spices, maltiness and a hint of nuts with a smootgh, lingering sweet and spicy finish.

Bottle shared with HogTownHarry & Dave B. -- courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours a hazy ruby-orange with a small diminishing off-white head. Very spicey aroma of Xmas spices along with caramel malt. Flavour’s the same, lots of Xmas spices and caramel malt with some alcohol and hops in the finish. Pretty simple and not for everyone but I loves me the spicey beers!

22-oz. bottle. Pours ruby-copper with an edgy tan head and patchy lacing on top. Aroma is cinnamon, clove and hoppy pine and spruce, candied sugars and malt (caramel, maple, cookie). Flavor starts with a cinnamon burn, moderately sweet and then acidic, drying to the palate, tart hoppy body, alcohol burn with a fading flavor. Medium and fizzy, spicy, dry palate.

Bomber, courtesy of my SS. Copper color with a tight, bubbled head. The spicy aroma is cinnamon and nutmeg with some pumpkin. The palate is creamy smooth, reminding me of ST PumpKing. Nice maltiness and nice hoppiness. This is one of the best LH beers I’ve had in a long while. Some almond flavors as well.

Pours a reddish/brown amber with a large bubbly off white head and a few small floaties. Head diminishes fairly quickly but some sticks around to lace the glass. Aroma of nutmeg, cinnamon, honey and some piney hops hidden in there. Also picking up some toasted malts. Flavors are similar, maybe a little less spice in the taste and a little more of the hops coming through. The hops in the flavor save this one from being overly "artificial". I think all the Pumpkin Ales I had earlier this year may have turned me a bit off to the spice beers.

Bottle. Poured a small fizzy tan head that quickly dissipated, fine-small sized bubbles, no lacing, carbonated, mostly transparent, and an orange brown hue. Aroma was malty, lightly hoppy, spicy, sweet and alcohol. The flavor was sweet, spicy, malty, some caramel, watery, and the vinuous crept in as the beer warmed up. Smooth, watery, thin mouthfeel. Light body.
