Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

Bottle. Mahogany pour. Almost the shade of Dr. Pepper, really. Small tanned froth on the surface. Nose is big ginger, clove, spices, caramel, and brown sugar, but is mainly gingerbread cookie though. Taste is more ginger, light clove, gingerbread cookies, nutmeg and spices. Very Christmas-y. Body is light-medium and smooth with mild carbonation. Finishes with more spices, again big ginger and clove, gingerbread cookies and light caramel.

Savannah, Ga. - Habersham Beverage Warehouse, 22 oz bomber. Dark copper, murky pour, light khaki head - dissipates quickly. Raisiny aroma, some moist pipe tobacco, wisp of chocolate. Flavor has some chewing tobacco, raisins, some molasses, and a minty undertone. Finishes just slightly boozy. Sticky mouthfeel. Good belly warmer.

Draught at The Flying Saucer in Raleigh, NC. Clear brown color with off white head. Minimally carbonated, so very smooth and easy on the palate. Caramel, cinnamon, vanilla, and nutmeg flavors and aroma. Very good holiday brew.

Bottle. Moderate head. Dark red amber. Aroma of cinamon and candy cane. Taste is malty cinamon. Too sweet. Too much spice does not work for me.

At the 2007 Big Beer, Belgians, & Barleywines Festival in Vail. Mahogany reddish-purple amber in color with a medium off-white head. Orange aroma with discernable cloves and nutmeg. Flavor is watery for the style, but produces honey seweetness, strong ginger, cinnamon, and even a bit of cardamom. I think they just cleaned out Mom’s spice cabinet and tossed everything in. Should have tossed in a bit more malt, eh? UPDATE 12/2007: At the Max & Joe’s Left Hand tasting. Huge strawberry flavor. Dark reddish amber with a medium-sized beige head. Palate is slightly peppery and harsh. Malty mouthfeel, but the strawberry flavors are remarkable!

A quality beer with a flavor that doesn’t suit me. I can still recognize the quality however. The aroma has ginger and nutmet. Some sugar in the flavor, cloves, more nutmeg and ginger. The spices are strong and prominent, but when combined with the sugar, the beer is a bit cloying.

Draught at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Clear dark amber with a creamy white head. Sweet aroma of cinnamon, spices and brown sugar. Clean spicy flavour of cinnamon and almond. Gingerbread in the aftertaste.
