Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

Thanks to Homerwantsbeer for sharing a growler. The beer is a dark reddish-brown color with a medium thin and foamy light beige head that burns away quickly. Stringy lacing that slides down the glass. Aroma of powdered cinnamon and sweet malt. Medium body with sweet spice flavors along with some fruit and pine. The finish is all kinds of sweet spices with a bit of honey and fruit aftertaste. Slightly above average overall.

2002: Big-bubbled head seems to die quickly; turns into a white edging. Ultra spicy and sweet, "eggnog" nose. Rather thick-bodied, smooth and soft on the palate; very nice. Low carbonation. Full of flavors, indeed: eggnog, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and pepper (even if they didn’t put any in), to name a few. Malts are sweet and chewy. Dryish hop bitterness in the finish... and the hop bitterness lingers in the aftertaste, along with many other spices. Cinnamon and nutmeg seem to take rank, overall. Pretty well balanced and well made, though a little overdone in the spice department for my personal liking. Although, if you like spicy and warming winter brews, you could quite possibly love this one. 2003: Very similar to last year’s, but I find this year’s a little more cloying and a little too sweet. Chestnut brown ... nutty, allspice, mild roast, some bitterness but not quite enough.

22. Pours grainy and opaque dark brown with a fairly dense (if thin) moussy tan head. Plenty of splotchy lacing. Huge sweet nose--almost smelled like an infection until I noticed honey and orange zest in the ingredients. Floral and sugary, then. Body’s on the high side of medium with a fair bit of tingly carb. Rich brown bread, nuts, and spices on the mid-palate, with plenty of lively pie spice, especially near the finish. This is a little too sweet and sticky today; might be a nice one in a few years, not sure. Pretty hard not to like it, pretty hard to love it. Good for cold winter nights, and tonight seems to be trying to qualify for that honor.

Courtesy of Degarth. Pours clear amber with deep copper edges and off white head. The aroma is full with dark fruity esters as well as a nice layer of spice containing ginger, cinnamon, cloves and all spice. I also get a mild malt, honey and caramel sweetness. It has an aggressively bold flavor with malt and caramel swirled honey sweetness followed by dark fruity esters. The load of spices enter about midway with ginger, cinnamon, cloves and all spice. The experience ends with remnants of the spice and caramel. I think the flavors are a little too bright and therefore I see room for improvement with age.

Brown orange. Super spicy aroma. Like gingerbread men, pumpkins, oranges. Flavor was spiced beyond belief with some noticeable alcohol. This was too much for me. Aroma was the best part.

Clear brown, thin head. Aroma is gingerbread, cinnamon, and nutmeg, kinda like one of those candles The Bride is always buying around Christmas time. Very sweet flavor up front. Serious ginger snap flavor, plus, I don’t know, apple pie, minus the apple? Pumpkin pie minus the pumpkin?

Clear, deep garnet/brown color. Vanilla, nut, spice (nutmeg) aroma. Flavor--I swirled it around in my mouth and got some fruitiness and alcohol, but also some vegetal notes. Not as interesting in the mouth as on the nose. Typical palate. Didn’t enjoy it that much after the aroma.

Draught: Aroma of spices, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Poured amber in color with a medium to large-sized, dense, foamy, off-white head that lasted throughout. Good lacing. Clear. Not sparkling. Flavor of cinnamon, nutmeg, and spices. Medium body. Dry, creamy texture. Average carbonation. Nutmeg finish.
