Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

Draught: Aroma of spices, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Poured amber in color with a medium to large-sized, dense, foamy, off-white head that lasted throughout. Good lacing. Clear. Not sparkling. Flavor of cinnamon, nutmeg, and spices. Medium body. Dry, creamy texture. Average carbonation. Nutmeg finish.

Dark amber beer, with pretty much no head on it - strong, spicy and floral aroma, smelling not unlike a christmas candle, with notes of clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg - the beer has a clean honey sweetness to it, and the spices are quite apparent, especially the ginger - nutmeg and cinnamon lend a drying character, but the beer remains fairly sweet - cloves become quite apparent late, becoming almost overpowering, along with some notes of allspice - some brown sugar and molasses also manifest in the finish - it truly does taste a lot like a christmas pastry - not bad, just a little cloying.

The aroma is like a christmas should be. It’s got spice, pine, fruit, bread, and molasses. The appearance is medium red brown with a small head. The flavor is like the aroma but the finish is astringent and soapy. The palate is a little thin. Overall it’s good but could have been great had it not has such a bitter finish.

The beer upon its pour form the 22-ounce bottle resides in the glass a somewhat hazy brown with nice highlights of ruby red, the light tan creamy head makes a nice two finger cap to the body, as it slowly fades, the resultant lace provides a tight seal upon the glass. Nose is sweet malt, many spices, fruity, crisp and pleasing, caramel also present, and a treat for the olfactory and ocular senses. Front has a spicy sweetness, touch of bittersweet chocolate, personable malt presence, top is medium in feel. Determined acidity at the finish, hops pleasantly spicy, spices continue their sweetness to the dry end, a bit of a tummy warmer, this winter warmer.

Dark cinnamon aroma. Can’t help but think of various pumpkin ales that I’ve had over the years. Cinnamon just isn’t a beer smell, but it smells, well, holiday-ish. Dark clear brew, fair bomber and label, chainmail lacing head. Really pretty smooth - the spices aren’t raw or too bitter. Fairly sweet, but not overly so. Not very bitter. A bit grassy and herbal on the backend, with golden raisins in the mix someplace. Medium to slightly heavy body. This would make a really good pork marinade - just add some garlic and citrus. Liquor Loft, closeout rack.

Small tan head, dark brown body with a red gleam. Chocolaty and dusty aroma, fruit and brandy notes and some alcohol. Biding flavor of malt, nutmeg, chocolate and tart fruit. Warming from the alcohol. Weird and unbalanced.

On tap at Capital Ale House - Downtown. Clear deep ruby body with a small creamy tan head. Sweet molassas aroma with a light spicy foreground. Sweet molassas and caramel flavor with a lot of spice. Dominated by nutmeg and some light coriander

Bottle: Pours a nice color; deep nut brown with plenty of clarity and a tan, creamy, lacing head. Sweet aroma with mild Christmas spice presence. Sweet ginger bread, brown sugar, lots of chai character and a sweet nutty notes as well. Sweet flavor. The mouthfeel is slick and warming. Has a light maple hint which leads to more toasted and spicy characteristics. Has some cardamom, clove, and slight boozy notes. Residual subdued cinnamon and a late roasted nutty malt hint. The flavor is a bit sweet for my taste, but something about it is reminiscent of a nice chai-tea, which I really like, and captures an ideal "warming" character for the winter season. Highly drinkable and enjoyable.
