Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

(Draught at Oliver Twist, Stockholm) Dark brown, with very little head. Medium body, lots of spices, definitely cinnamon and ginger. Tastes very much like swedish ginger biscuits. A bit on the sweet side for my taste. Very "christmasy". Definitely worth a taste.

Bottle: Pours a nice color; deep nut brown with plenty of clarity and a tan, creamy, lacing head. Sweet aroma with mild Christmas spice presence. Sweet ginger bread, brown sugar, lots of chai character and a sweet nutty notes as well. Sweet flavor. The mouthfeel is slick and warming. Has a light maple hint which leads to more toasted and spicy characteristics. Has some cardamom, clove, and slight boozy notes. Residual subdued cinnamon and a late roasted nutty malt hint. The flavor is a bit sweet for my taste, but something about it is reminiscent of a nice chai-tea, which I really like, and captures an ideal "warming" character for the winter season. Highly drinkable and enjoyable.

A nice ruby red / orange to brown appearance with a nice initial head that provided continuous lacing along the glass walls for half of the drink. A nice look. The aroma was very spiced over some caramel malts. The flavor revealed ginger and cinnamon. Cloves were evident after reading they were in there. Mouthfeel was moderate and a little bit acidic. Good job for the style, although the ginger was a bit too strong. (Like a high abv Great Lakes Christmas Ale.)

RE-RATE: it looks appetizing. shimmering dark brown fade on the pour with a seemingly rapidly-fading insufficient head for my tastes, but nonetheless, it has a nice hue. aromas of spice; i wish i had a spice rack in front of me to isolate all of them. there’s a small amount of hops in the nose, but it’s more of that yeast and malt aroma. also - a big whiff reveals the orange peel stuffed deep inside. gingerbread cake. that’s the flavor.it’s got a zing to it. it’s a yummy beer, filling, but drinkable. this beer has complexity and is very approachable - it definitely beats a spiked cider for the cabin getaway...i dig it.

22oz. brown bomber served in a Duvel tulip. Poured a pretty clear ruby red. Medium bubbled low white head. Pumpkin pie spices in the aroma. Cinnamon, clove, allspice. Spices predominated the flavor as well. Rich and full bodied, big malt base with a long chocolatey malt finish. I don’t think I could drink a whole lot of this, a bomber was plenty. If you like spiced holiday beers, this would be right up your alley.

Dark red color. Head disappeared very quickly. Sweet smell, of fruit and spices. Different taste. Lots of dark fruit and cinnamon. Spice flavor really comes through on the finish.

Pours a murky brown, with a quickly dissipating light tan head. Smell is quite interesting and compex. Tons of different things to pick out. Graham crackers, nutmeg, clove, brown sugar, cinnamon, and if you breathe deeply a little ketchup. Taste is somewhat similar to the smell, big on the nutmeg and some clove. Cinnamon, brown sugar, and various other spices are all quite noticeable. Finish is fairly smooth and delightful. I dug this brew

Merry September to me. Great entertaining beer around the holidays but not an everyday or week for that matter brew for the following reasons. Smells like a milk chocolate covered mint candy cane and a christmas version of a spiced morning glory muffin. Flavor is heavy milky sweetness and holiday spice all around. It’s buttery and filling and a little overwhelming on the sugar scale. Feels great in the mouth, filling and coating all the way and the carbonation is just enough to excentuate the spice. Very cool beer which I will gladly purchase during the holiday months. Thanks Left Hand. 08 or 09. 22 oz.
