Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

Clear dark brown body, off-white head. Smells of spices, palate is somewhat thin. Flavour is an overabundance of nutmeg spice with a little malt.

22 oz bottle via shp555 (thanks!). Pours a semi hazy dark reddish brown with an average beige head. Nose is cardamom, nutmeg, cinnamon. And that is how it tastes with some added candy, orange peel and some subtle earthy hops. Body is medium, carbonation medium.I don’t normally care for spicy beers, but this one is actually one of the better ones as the spices blend well and are not overpowing.Nice work!

22 oz. bottle - Poured dark brown with small head. Aroma is sweet malt with hint of nutmeg. Flavor is manly toasted malt with a ripe banana finish.I also tasted cinnamon and other various spices. Overall a really great winter beer, warms belly with high ABV.

Courtesy of Degarth. Amber colored, dark center with lighter edges. 1 finger thick white head, no retention, leaves a foamy layer atop the beer and minimal lacing. Nose of hops, caramel malts, assorted spices, honey, ginger, citrus fruits, cloves and nutmeg. Flavor profile very similar, heavy on the spice and juicy citrus fruits. Good stuff, but there is something I can’t quite put my finger on that keeps it from reaching that next level and being a really good beer. Medium bodied, slightly sticky and very warming. Lengthy, spicy and sweet fruit filled finish, with a wave of hops and astringency at the very end.

Bottle. Pours deep red brown with a beige head. Sweet malty aroma, with ginger bread and clove. The flavor is sweet malty and spicy, with cinnamon and ginger. Moderate bitterness in the finish.

Bottle courtesy of SecretSanta BeerandBlues. Pours a dark brown with a small light brown head. Aroma is rasins, nutmeg, clove, cinnamon, dark malts. Flavor is dark malts, spices, almost like a pumpkinless-pumpkin beer as noted by other raters. Interesting winter brew, I actually enjoyed this one a bit.

courtesy of fishingnet Pours amber, beige head Aroma is sugary - honey - loaded with spices and ginger Taste. The ginger reminded me a lot of the bad experience I had with LF Juju ginger beer. Regardless of that, the beer is a fine enjoyable brew Loaded with sweet honey and ginger, cinnamon and other spices. There is plenty of spices to go about here.

22oz bottle with Butters. Pours a light tan head that laces with a dark amber body with ruby highlights. Tastes of ginger, citrus, and some spice. The ginger lingers and is a bit too strong for me.
