Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

Ruby red-brown in color. Spicy, clovey aroma with hints of molassas. Juniper, clove and hop flavors. Good balance - a spiced ale with enough hops to kill some of the sweetness. Slight molassas flavor also.

Hazy dark amber color. Aroma of mild chocolate spices (cinnamon) and sweet oranges. Medium body strength, with malt, a lot of sweet caramel, mild chocolate, gingerbread spices, a touch of orangeses, reasonable bitterness. Quite balanced Christmas ale.

Ruby umber color with a moderate, creamy looking tan head. Decent lace. Nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger power over the dark fruit bread aromas. Good malt depth with caramel and a pumpkin muffin flavor. Quite balanced as spice brews go. They are certainly there, but not in an overpowering spice rack type. Gingersnaps with a mild cream frosting. A nice winter warmer.

had this on draft at the left hand brewery. For once, an xmas ale that isn’t over spiced. Thank you. the spice flavor and aroma is there, but it’s still tasty & drinkable.

XXXmas Ale bottle sampled on 11/1/06: Pours a clear copper amber with a thin-lacing white head. Aroma of sweet caramel malt and cinnamon nutmeg spice. Body starts fairly full and caramely sweet, balanced with a good amount of spices and ginger toward a more bitter spiced, mild milk chocolate finish. A nice holiday beer.

Pours a gorgeous russett brown with a thin head. The aroma is a strong, but not overwhelming spiciness (nutmeg and maybe cinnamon, something coming across as peper) over a slight bit of orange and a bit of honey. There’s a bit of heat in the back.

A pretty decent winter brew. Very spicy - cinnamon and nutmeg. Murky-brown aroma, slightly tan head. Decent, mildly sweet aroma. Lots of figs in here. Pleasantly balanced with hops and malts. It really "tastes like christmas".

Very interesting. I rated it fairly high after drinking most of the bottle but it would have been very low if it had been after only one sip. I think of this drink less as a beer and more as a holiday alcoholic beverage to be enjoyed maybe once a season. Low carbonation, very sweet, and heavy on the honey although the cloves and ginger are fairly apparent as well.
