Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

Savannah, Ga. - Habersham Beverage Warehouse, 22 oz bomber. Dark copper, murky pour, light khaki head - dissipates quickly. Raisiny aroma, some moist pipe tobacco, wisp of chocolate. Flavor has some chewing tobacco, raisins, some molasses, and a minty undertone. Finishes just slightly boozy. Sticky mouthfeel. Good belly warmer.

Thin head of fine and dense bubbles. Light carbonation. Loads of spices in the aroma. Lots of ginger and cinnamon. Bit of juniper and some sweet malts. Color is a dark mahagony red. Lots more spices in the flavor but less than in the aroma. Juniper and sweet malty with a touch of honey. A nice holiday brew. Hides its alcohol pretty well. Finishes sweet and spicy. A decent brew.

Bottle. Nose smells like cinamon, pumpkin, and allspice. Taste-ginger, pumpkin, cinnamon, clove. This tastes just like gingersnaps. Quite nice.

Christmas spices en masse. Sweet with dades, raisins and maybe a little bit smokiness. Bitterness does not come through until aftertaste. Quite special.

Courtesy of Secret Santa. <P> Lots of spices in the aroma...definitely nutmeg. Maybe some ginger and cinnamon. Rich amber color with a two finger thick tan head. Smooth malt base with lots of spice. It tastes a little like gingerbread and fruitcake. Very Christmas-y. Mouthfeel is somewhat watery, but I imagine that is partly due to the flavors (of cake and bread) the spices invoke thus triggering the tongue to expect more texture.

This dark amber pour smells like rosemary and holly. The flavor is sweet and spicy and is balanced nicely. I enjoyed this holiday beer and will be sure to add it to my list for next winter.

Pours dark brown/black with ruby hues and a mostly receding light tan head. Aroma of nutmeg, cinnamon, and dark candied malt. Tastes of caramel, nutmeg, and vanilla. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation. Interesting, but a bit too spicy for me.
