Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

Clear brown, light color. Nose is spicy cinnamon, ginger, peppermint... flavor is creamy and spicy peppermint, yeast, but not very agressive... zesty yeast abounds... light body, quite good but lacking depth, with a little unpleasent peanut flavor... soapy too.

A toffee-caramel aroma that’s a little malty. This has a complexly changing flavor. It has a light-around-the-edges start but thicker in the middle. I think I taste nutmeg and cloves at the end. Something gives it a grainy finish that doesn’t come from hops. Interesting, but not amazing. Had again and gave a score of 3.2.

Bottled. Deep brown. Small, beige head. Fruity and spicy in both aroma and flavour; clove, vanilla and physalis-fruit.

Bottle: Deep amber brown with reddish highlights, a small head and good lace. The aroma has notes a carmel, honey, aromatic hops, pipe tobacco, currants, pear, cinnamom, ginger, and nutmeg. The taste has heavy spice qualities throughout with light to moderate levels of dark fruits and subdued bitters. Needs more depth below all those spices, a bit over the top. The feel is crisp and hoilday like for sure with the bitters and spices doing a number on the tongue. I did like this more than expected, wasn’t so spicy I couldn’t drink it...but still could be better balanced.

Bottle at Delirium Cafe, GöteborgAmber color, offwhite head. Clove aroma, malty and vanilla notes, creamy and fruity. Clove flavor, malty but also hoppy, quite pleasant with some spices, cinnamon for example. Malty finish with some hops.

The scene of a cozy ski lodge on the label of this bomber set the mood for a spiced winter ale tasting. The beer poured out clear boron, and displayed a one finger thick fizzy head. It was a lighter looking than the typical spiced ale, but was quite spicy smelling with assertive spruce, ginger, and cinnamon aromas. Taste was festive, as spices detected via the nose were present in abundant quantities to form an initial spice cake-like crust, on the tongue, which subsequently dissolved into gingerbread like malty body. The texture was airy and soft, and the finish continued with the spices, and ended on a lingering nutmeg note. Some might consider the spicing overdone, as there was not a hefty body to go along with it, but I found it to be pleasantly bold. Worth a try, if you enjoy winter spices.

Grandma's Spice cake here as a beer! Ginger. It wants just a little more body to balance some of the spiciness, but it's a pleasurable kind of beer to have one or two of during the winter months. This one is a little more different than most and worth a try.

Bottle: Brownish with copper highlights, moderate to large frothy head, light beige in color, dies somewhat quickly, spotty lacing.   Heavy spiced nose.   Licorice, nutmeg, and cinnamon are the stronger components in this one.   Softer elements of roasted malts, peated malt, and ash on the tongue, all while remaining fairly spicy.   Does have a little bit of burnt molasses feel to it.   Moderate body and mouthfeel.   Strong spicy finish, sweet but not cloying.   All the components combine to make one big lingering spiced up finish.   A bit of citrus peel and ginger emerge after the finish.   Good Winter offering.
