Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

This bottled brew poured a large sized head of frothy medium sized mostly diminishing light brown colored bubbles that left behind an unnoted lacing. The body contained its initial strong carbonation fades to soft carbonation, was transparent and caramel brown in color. Its aroma contained notes of malty caramel and was nice. Its mouth feel is initially slightly tingly with a fading slightly tingly palate and a smooth caramel malt bite aftertaste. Its flavor contained malt hop flavor favoring the caramel malts notes. This brew had a good kick to it!

Bottle: Brownish with copper highlights, moderate to large frothy head, light beige in color, dies somewhat quickly, spotty lacing.   Heavy spiced nose.   Licorice, nutmeg, and cinnamon are the stronger components in this one.   Softer elements of roasted malts, peated malt, and ash on the tongue, all while remaining fairly spicy.   Does have a little bit of burnt molasses feel to it.   Moderate body and mouthfeel.   Strong spicy finish, sweet but not cloying.   All the components combine to make one big lingering spiced up finish.   A bit of citrus peel and ginger emerge after the finish.   Good Winter offering.

Pours with a frothy pale tan colored head, it is brilliantly clear showing a pretty ruby color when held up to the light that shows a deep amber color otherwise. The aroma is quite spicy with notes of cinnamon, cola, and perhaps some notes of nutmeg. The aroma is really dominated by the spices, almost a bit like pumpkin pie. The beer is lightly sweet and not too sweet up front. Towards the end though the spices begin to kick in, it finishes with a harsh spicy astringency, that though evident, does not overwhelm the rest of the beer.

The beer has a medium fullness to it, that does not quite tame the spice character, a little more malt and a touch more alcohol would help to balance the spices. While this beer is a bit out of balance, it is still pretty enjoyable; if they had cut back on the clove a bit (at least I am pretty sure this is the culprit), this beer would be a bit more balanced, though it still would not be great.

22oz bottle. Nice brew, extremely prominent spices. Not overwhelming in the taste but gave off a distinct (to me) aftertaste of honey or Dijon mustard. Is that good or bad? Not sure. I liked it though.

At the 2007 Big Beer, Belgians, & Barleywines Festival in Vail. Mahogany reddish-purple amber in color with a medium off-white head. Orange aroma with discernable cloves and nutmeg. Flavor is watery for the style, but produces honey seweetness, strong ginger, cinnamon, and even a bit of cardamom. I think they just cleaned out Mom’s spice cabinet and tossed everything in. Should have tossed in a bit more malt, eh? UPDATE 12/2007: At the Max & Joe’s Left Hand tasting. Huge strawberry flavor. Dark reddish amber with a medium-sized beige head. Palate is slightly peppery and harsh. Malty mouthfeel, but the strawberry flavors are remarkable!

Bottle. Poured brown hue with average creamy off-white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Heavy spicy pumpkin pie aroma. Medium to full body with a creamy texture. Heavy sweet pumpkin pie in a blender with a hoppy beer added flavor and an average sweet finish. Interesting drinkable brew.

Medium brown pour little head. Huge nutmeg and mild malt aroma. The Nutmeg faded within several minutes. Overall "ok" mild spice hints of malt, thin body but ABV well hidden.

Decent christmas spice and malt nose. Thin head, deeper red garnet but clear. Rich, nice spicyness, slightly sweeter than it has balance for,it lingers a little bit. I really like the upfront spices of cinnimon, ginger and lots spice but wish the sweetness was cleaned up at the end.
