Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

Dark copper color. Starts out with some caramel and cinnamon and then finishes with a burning ginger spice. This is a very spicy brew. I think if you're going to add spices to a beer then do it heavily. It's an allout spice assult.

Bottle 22 oz. Pours a medium to dark brown with small off white head. Aroma is full of ginger, with nutmeg, cinnamon, and clove. Some light sugary sweetness comes through in the nose as well. Flavor is fairly heavy on the spice side with similar notes as the aroma, covering up any potential malt or hop presence. Finish is short and has the same amalgam of spices. Carbonation is low and mouthfeel medium thick. Alcohol is evident in the finish but not nearly 8.6% evident. Not bad for a winter warmer though possibly overspiced.

Good for what it is, but as spices do little to get my "elf on" I can only get just so excited. I have more notes on this, but don’t think they’ll add much beyond my liking this is a limited manner.

Bottle. Mahogany pour. Almost the shade of Dr. Pepper, really. Small tanned froth on the surface. Nose is big ginger, clove, spices, caramel, and brown sugar, but is mainly gingerbread cookie though. Taste is more ginger, light clove, gingerbread cookies, nutmeg and spices. Very Christmas-y. Body is light-medium and smooth with mild carbonation. Finishes with more spices, again big ginger and clove, gingerbread cookies and light caramel.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle: Dark color of chestnut brown with a thin bubbuly airy head of just off-white. Very different aroma here ... spicey to be sure, and another aspect that’s harder for me to pin down ... anise maybe? Same for the flavor ... over the undertow of sweet malt, there’s a distinct flavoring of honey, ginger! (that’s what that was in the aroma!), and other less obtrusive spices. This is just as advertised and is a good choice for those who enjoy such creations. (#2724, 2/20/2007)

Bottle. Pours a clear reddish-brown color with a medium off-white head. Some lacing. Aroma of cinnamon, ginger, and maybe even some pumpkin to it. Smells a little like pumpkin pie. Mouthfeel is slightly above-average. Flavor is pretty sweet, with ginger playing a large role in the taste. Hints of cinnamon and brown sugar are also present. Nothing special, but drinkable. One bomber is plenty for me.

Very dark brown in color. Thin-looking, but actually relatively full on the palate. Honey sweetness and cinnamon/nutmeg/clove spice up front are true to the aromas of this beer. Maple sugar sweetness and caramel malts. Faint citrus in the background.

Nice pour, a deep reddish copper with a thick light tan head. The aroma’s like fruit cake sans the fruit, spicy with ginger, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon - all that Christmas cookie stuff. There’s caramel beneath the spices in the flavor, but after drinking it a while, it all begins to wear. Still, a nice spicy finish and a respectable drink for the holidays.
