Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

Not a bad Christmas beer but not my favorite by any means. Looks exactly like extremely strong tea when poured. Not much of a head to this. Smells like a big pumpkin pie that’s been laced with alcohol. Very sweet taste to this beer, as expected. Almost too sweet tasting. I can definitely taste the honey and spices in this but I’m not sure in a good way. I’m not sure how much of this I could drink. I finished this one but I don’t know if I would drink a second. It’s not a bad beer or anything, but it’s just a bit sweet for my tastes.

22 oz bomber purchased at Frugal MacDoogal’s about a year ago. Poured a dark amber/red color with a one finger off white head. The aroma was very spicy with cinnamon and cloves. The flavor was not as malty as I expected. The same spices in the aroma are still very present. This tastes like a pumpkin beer, without the pumpkin finish.

Bottle. Pours dark opaque brown, with a thin biege head. Spicy smell of gingerbread and peppermint. Medium-thin body. Very sweet gingerbread flavor up-front, with a somewhat crisp edge.

Bomber from College Liquors in Grand Junction, CO. I can’t believe I still have beers from that trip around. Pours a dark chestnut color with a medium off-white head. The aroma is mostly spices, especially cloves and nutmeg. The taste is similar; load of initial spiciness, some nutmeg, cloves, ginger, some citrus zest, and a decent malt background. Nice, but not an everyday beer, very spicy.

A nicely spiced winter ale. Nutmeg, cloves, ginger, cinnamon all make for a pleasant aroma. Flavor is malty, nice amount of sugar...all with a nice winter spice background. Farily alcoholic, which is covered well. A good beer for those cold winter nights in front of a fire.

Bomber. Pours a very pretty dark amber with a light tan head. Smooth mouthfeel and strong spice flavors. Really thick aftertaste. Like a gingerbread house in a bottle; the spices quickly become overpowering. It’s over-spiced, but it’s still a nice winter warmer and would be a great treat at the Christmas party.

The cinnamon, clove, and allspice notes really come forward. Approachable despite the alcohol burn on the way down the throat.

Pours dark amber with light tan head. Aromas of raisins and spices. Tastes of roasted fruit and honey. Good for a cold winter night.
