Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

Pours clear bronze with a thick tan head. The aroma has rich toasted malt with cinnamon, allspice (?) and other spices ~ it reminds me of an alcoholic root beer. Medium body that starts crisp and then feels a bit smooth. The flavor starts with the aspects of the aroma but leans towards tasting medicinal. The finish dries things out a bit. A decent beer.

Bottle. A brown color. A good malty aroma but the spice comes through well in the flavor. A slight mint chocolate flavor. Rating from December 2005 notes.

Medium copper w/a lasting light beige head. Caramel & toasty malt w/a a light cinnamon and ginger spice aroma. Some baked apple fruitiness and nutmeg becomes apparent as it warms as well as hints of alcohol. Malty cinnamon/ginger spice but not as predominant as in the aroma, low fruitiness and a lightly roasty finish and aftertaste. Medium bodied w/ a smooth m/f, low carbonation a warming alcohol. It doesn't seem as highly spiced flavor wise as a typical Christmas beer which is fine by me, but it lacks a little overall character to be a great beer IMHO.

22-oz. bottle. Pours ruby-copper with an edgy tan head and patchy lacing on top. Aroma is cinnamon, clove and hoppy pine and spruce, candied sugars and malt (caramel, maple, cookie). Flavor starts with a cinnamon burn, moderately sweet and then acidic, drying to the palate, tart hoppy body, alcohol burn with a fading flavor. Medium and fizzy, spicy, dry palate.

Tap at Kuma’s. Pours a deep, dark reddish brown, though translucent. minimal head. Nose is actually quite fruity, cinnamon and the orange zest jump out, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was cardamom either. Taste is pretty intense and rich. Sweet and moderately spicy, a hint of ginger and cinnamon but just somehow very rich. Not the easiest drinking, but not a horrible beer, either.

Dark red amber with a nice white creamy head and big spicy aroma. Flavor is overly sweet and spicy with a big sweet spicy cloying finish.

Dark brown with a thick, creamy off white head. Aroma is of spices: cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Taste is malty with strong spice flavor. Strong yet smooth and light on the tongue. Spices are not heavy, but almost playful on the tongue. Nice beer, complex but not over the top.

Shared with Mr. Facto, CaptainCougar, & 1FastSTi. 22 oz bottle. Poured clear with a port like color and a light head. The aroma was all clove and allspice. Strong. The flavor also was dominated by allspice. That spice was layered all though the malt body of this lightly sweet brew. Medium body that had a mineral quality to its slickness. Not my favorite but I think I’ve discovered I don’t like allspice in my beer.
