Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

Brassy garnet. Initially frothy head collapses into an ivory ring. Extremely buoyant carbonation. Cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar eclipse the aromatic malt nuances. Minimal stewed-apple and plum fruitiness. Loose carbonation. Body pakcs considerable weight. Body’s softness is coupled with a dry, hard edge of roastines and a caramelized malt sweetness which harmonize with the dusting of brown sugar and cinnamon. Tacky residuals help pillar the body and compensate for the lack of malt heft, as the prickly spices continue to overshadow the potentially lustrous malts. Floral hop bitterness gains some steam, late. Lack of cleanliness (vegetal flabbiness) becomes more evident as the temperature rises above 60F. Alcohol induces noticeable warmth, considering its moderate strength. Finishes slightly tinny with a biscuity sweetness and chalky toastiness, but prominently spice-laden with lingering cinnamon, nutmeg and some gingery heat. Fairly simplistic and overspiced, but certainly passable.

Thanks to Homerwantsbeer for sharing a growler. The beer is a dark reddish-brown color with a medium thin and foamy light beige head that burns away quickly. Stringy lacing that slides down the glass. Aroma of powdered cinnamon and sweet malt. Medium body with sweet spice flavors along with some fruit and pine. The finish is all kinds of sweet spices with a bit of honey and fruit aftertaste. Slightly above average overall.

Draught. Reddish color, medium creamy, off-white head. Nice lacing and retention. Very spicy nose, a lot of nutmeg. Flavor is light, nutty, and spicy in the end. The spices give it a slightly astringent finish.

NUTMEGORAMA. Dominant taste: nutmeg. Must have some nutmeg in it... What an odd and slightly unappealing label. A smoldering woman and a hooka? A smoking flapper and an ornate bedpost? All in a very tacky red/green zappy diamond thing. Pours (from bottole) with very little head. The aroma is nice. My wife said it smelled like a cake. The initial flavor let me down after the aroma. This is the bane of Christmas beers for me though. The nutmeg is overly strong. But the beer part is pretty nice. Malty, simple caramel flavor that hides (via nutmeg?) the relitively high booze factor. I taste a little honey in the sweetness which is also fairly hidden. The beer gains SIGNIFICANT goodness when allowed to warm. I would suggest not drinking much at all till it is at least halfway to room temp. The finish is by far the best part for me. Spicy and once the nutmeg blast is over with you can taste licorise. Interesting.

Don’t drink it too cold, and I am sure I mentioned that it tastes like nutmeg?

Pours with an amber-red body topped by a medium thick head with some lacing. It’s sweet and malty with tons of all spice and nutmeg notes. Almost to much. Medium bodied and slightly warming.

A dark amber beer with a disappearing beige head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of ginger. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt and ginger. Definately a christmas beer - and OK.
