Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

(Bottle) Pours dark brown with red hints. Very spicy aroma with tones of clove, cardamom, nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger(bread). Fruity with notes of oranges, bananas, cherries and some other more subtle fruits. The malt brings light notes of caramel and chocolate. Very spicy flavour as well with clove and ginger up front but also some hints of nutmeg and cinnamon. Some notes celery of both in the aroma and in the flavour. Creamy and round but maybe a tiny bit raw mouthfeel. Spices linger in the aftertaste. Medium full body.

Bomber. Clear dark brown/copper. Aroma of... yep... gingerbread, and all the familiar spices therein--ginger, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon. A bit of a balsamic note as well. Not quite Chinese dumpling sauce territory fortunately. Flavor is of a more subtle gingerbread malt with some mild hoppiness at the end. For some strange reason I’m picking up a slight fresh lemon juice note underneath. Not too overbearing, sweet or dumpling saucey like I fear from others in this seasonal category. Basically palatable gingerbread-spiced Xmas ale.

Tap. Dark pour with little head. Varying aromas, very pleasant. Offering wasn’t thin bodied which suprised me. I didn’t notice the spices that many other reviewers mention.

2007 version. Poured reddish brown with a thin tan head. Aroma -- Sweet, spicey and maybe some licorace. The taste was heavy on the ginger. Very sweet and thick. Also soem clove and nutmeg. The spices seem to dominate here. A bit unbalanced.

Bomber poured a clear brown with a small, lasting amber head. Aromas of spices, sweet malt and a hint of nuts. Palate was medium bodied, smooth yet crisp. Flavors of spices, maltiness and a hint of nuts with a smootgh, lingering sweet and spicy finish.

Pours a cloudy root beer barrel (the candy) brown with a creamy beige head. The nose is a sweet and spicy blend of chocolaty cocoa, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Medium-bodied and slick with a moderately dry and lightly bitter finish, the flavor follows the nose with the profile skewed towards the spices vs. the chocolate. If it were the other way around, I would like this one a lot more than I do. It’s a decent winter warmer, but I’m just not a huge fan of heavily spiced beers.

On tap at rattle n hum. Pours dark. Noticeably spicy and hopped beer. This is a pretty good winter warmer style ale.

This beer pours a deep dark amber colour. Medium khaki head that leaves scattered lacing. Very enticing aroma of mixed spices, cloves, cinammon and honey. Mouthfeel is smooth, well balanced and full. Taste is very pleasent and a dance of sweet and spicey.
