Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

Loved this Christmas beer, very dark amber, almost brownish color, very little head & what head there was disappeared very quickly, spicy nose, lots of cinnamon, nutmeg, hint of ginger & cloves, nice spicy flavors, more cinnamon & nutmeg in the finish, all-around great seasonal brew

Clear brown, thin head. Aroma is gingerbread, cinnamon, and nutmeg, kinda like one of those candles The Bride is always buying around Christmas time. Very sweet flavor up front. Serious ginger snap flavor, plus, I don’t know, apple pie, minus the apple? Pumpkin pie minus the pumpkin?

Light fizzy, almost creamy head with beautiful lacing. Dark mahogany tawny brown/ruby. Aroma is very spicey with notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, coriander and sweet caramel. Belgian Special B is here too with nice hops. The flavor is not too well balanced, very spicy, not enough body to balance it out. A strong and well upfront spiced beer, thanks acrodizer!

This had some spice. Dark brew. I didn’t notice the honey or the orange zest, but maybe it added to the overall texture of this beer. This did feel like a liquid cake in many ways. I really enjoyed this beer. It made me want to be left with only a case of this stuff on a antarctic island.

(bottle - 22 oz) Dark red pour with a fluffy tan head. Aroma is very sweet and spicy. Lots of dark malts, cinnamon, clove, gingerbread, and toffee. Flavor is quite spicy as well. The cinnamon and cloves dominate and give way to a sweet and creamy malt middle and a spicy finish of cloves and gingerbread. A bit cloying but quite nice.
