Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

Pours a murky brown, with a quickly dissipating light tan head. Smell is quite interesting and compex. Tons of different things to pick out. Graham crackers, nutmeg, clove, brown sugar, cinnamon, and if you breathe deeply a little ketchup. Taste is somewhat similar to the smell, big on the nutmeg and some clove. Cinnamon, brown sugar, and various other spices are all quite noticeable. Finish is fairly smooth and delightful. I dug this brew.

Tasted 10/28/07. 22oz bomber. Filtered with a lively pour. Ruby hue. Spicy holiday aromas. Three fingers of off-white head. Nutty, almost juniper aromas. Caramel. Fresh with a mild burn. Full bodied with a good caramel malt backbone. Cinnamon and spicy piney resinous flavors. Cocoa and coffee acidity. Red fruity notes. Young and piney. Delicious.

Bomber. Clear red/copper color with a medium head. Aroma was spicy wassail like with honey, orange and caramel malt.
A very malty and warm brew, toffee and caramel, followed by the honey and spices. Chewy. You’ve gotta try this before you say that you don’t like any Winter Spiced ales.

Dark pour with limited white head. Aroma of spices and some citrus. Flavor is really strong but delicious, orange, honey, and cinnamon with other spices, with a great aftertaste. Best spiced winter ale I have ever had.

Growler from the brewpub. Pours light brown with a medium tan head. Heavily spiced aroma of cinnamon, ginger, clove and nutmeg. Cinnamon spice flavor with honey sweetness, ginger, some hop and a touch of alcohol. Pretty good overall.

Intense spiced aroma: cardamon, ginger and orange. Spice dominate the taste as well: cinnamon and cloves. If you want a spiced, strong ale, this is the one!

Sample at December 12, 2008 Beer Club meeting. Medium dark brown color. Small head. Spicy aroma! Reminds me of a spice cake. Light, but a little syrupy. You can actually taste the alcohol a little in this. And the spices... cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon are in your face but not overpowering. Heavy, nice gravity. Love it!
