Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

650 ml. Slightly foggy, ruby-tinged mahogany brew with a small but lasting head. Aroma of soured orange, caramel, nutmeg and cinnamon. Initial flavor is orange, nutmeg, cinnamon and toffee, turning to roasted pecan and walnut. Finish is drying with notes of whiskey sour, oak barrel, clove, peppery ginger, cocoa, and char. Medium body is almost smooth, but has a lot of spice-tingle and finishes dry. With a touch more body and a pinch less clove this would be a great brew.

XXXmas Ale: Pours a cloudy brown color with a medium sized, white head. The aroma on this is extraordinary. Has a huge gingerbread scent with nutmeg, cinnamon, and wassle. Decent mouth feel overall. The flavor is dead on with the aroma, again big gingerbread flavor with some cinnamon and other spices. The malt is present but is overpowered by the other flavors. Drank this on a hot night while playing volleyball and it was great, I can only imagine how it would be on a cold winter’s night. Exceptional.

Bomber. Pours a very dark amber with a medium creamy light tan head that diminshes quickly leaving behind good sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is a dark fruit malt with raisin and spice. Medium mouthfeel with a spicy roasted malt taste with cinnamon and molasses. Hides the alcohol well making it easy to drink, a good spice brew from Left Hand.

Sample at December 12, 2008 Beer Club meeting. Medium dark brown color. Small head. Spicy aroma! Reminds me of a spice cake. Light, but a little syrupy. You can actually taste the alcohol a little in this. And the spices... cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon are in your face but not overpowering. Heavy, nice gravity. Love it!

Growler from the brewpub. Pours light brown with a medium tan head. Heavily spiced aroma of cinnamon, ginger, clove and nutmeg. Cinnamon spice flavor with honey sweetness, ginger, some hop and a touch of alcohol. Pretty good overall.

Intense spiced aroma: cardamon, ginger and orange. Spice dominate the taste as well: cinnamon and cloves. If you want a spiced, strong ale, this is the one!

Mahogany pour with a big and nice creamy head filled with large bubbles. Sparse and spotty lacing. Musty malt aromas with a bit of hops and spice. A little earthy as well. Big spice, maybe cinnamon and nutmeg in the flavor. Malts back that up, though they are light. Creamy, spice filled palate, full bodied and finishes with a bit of cinnamon. Good winter. Thanks acrodizer!!!
