Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

Pours a dull, tea-like brown. Nose of strong spices, most notably cinnamon and nutmeg. A bit of orange lies in the background. Flavor is a rounding out of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, and a touch of orange. A bit thin and blunt in the finish, but it’s fine. Palate is a tad too watery; I’d like more assertiveness. I’ll have more of this; quite good.

Bomber poured a clear brown with a small, lasting amber head. Aromas of spices, sweet malt and a hint of nuts. Palate was medium bodied, smooth yet crisp. Flavors of spices, maltiness and a hint of nuts with a smootgh, lingering sweet and spicy finish.

Bottle (650ml). Shared with blankboy and Dave B, my bottle, via trade with Fyrecrakker05. Poured hazy ruby-mahogany with an average off-white head. Very spicy (pepper, winter spices, cinnamon) aroma, sweety toasty malt, slightly vegetal, noticeable alcohol, floral hops. Taste is extremely, sharply herbal - bitterness mixed with minty sweetness, but finishes quite bitter, wow. Mouthfeel is astringent, lively, long finish. Nice - 3.28?? I like it more than that ...

From a 22 once bottle purchased at By The Bottle in Vancouver, WA--Deep amber body with a small whitish head. Gritty, nutty, brown sugar nose with lots of hops and sweet stickiness. Nose of sweet Christmas spiciness including cinnamon, nutmeg, honey, brown sugar. pine and clove-esque orange peel yumminess. OMG. Way better than I was expecting by these naysayers. LOL!

From a 22 oz. bomber bottle with a list of ingredients along the right side of label, winter 2006/2007 vintage. Poured a reddish brown with a small foamy off-white head that settled into a fine lacing, minimal amount of sticking. Aromas of Christmas spices, cinnamon, clove, cardamon, nutmeg, ginger, an orangey honey, a light caramel and a subtle herbalness. Moderate carbonation and a softly crisp, dryish, velvety smooth medium bodied mouthfeel. Definitely Christmas spicy taste, gingerbready with all the spices, orange zesty, honey to go with the soft caramel, toffee malts, an earthy, herbal hoppiness with a brisk bitterness, the alcohol is lightly warming in the palate and a brief alcohol flavor emerges at the end, and a dry ginger spicy, malty finish. A nice winter seasonal from Left Hand, easy drinkability, because of the spices used, I should have tried this over the recent Christmas holiday.

Pours a deep nut brown mahogany color w/ a medium semi creamy froth. Aroma is full on sweet Angostura bitters. Medium full nectar w/ mellow residual effers creating a very creamy texture. This is one spiced brew. Tastes like it smells. Strong flavors of Angostura bitters w/ a touch of sweetness. Ginger, evergreen, licorice, clove, roasted nut shells, sweet chestnut. Finish is long and well bittered w/ the spice going the full distance. Overall: a strongly spiced brew w/ a creamy texture. Rather interesting.

(Draught at Oliver Twist, Stockholm) Dark brown, with very little head. Medium body, lots of spices, definitely cinnamon and ginger. Tastes very much like swedish ginger biscuits. A bit on the sweet side for my taste. Very "christmasy". Definitely worth a taste.
