Commercial Description:
In honor of the mighty St. Vrain River that lies due west of the brewery, we've named our latest release in our limited edition "Big Mo" series St. Vrain Tripel. The St. Vrain River originates in Rocky Mountain National Park, and flows through Longmont on its way east. Named after Ceran St. Vrain, an early settler of the valley who helped establish the first permanent trading post by white men in what is now Colorado. A reflection of this pioneering spirit can also be found in the ales of Belgium, where brewers, often monks, developed beers of distinctive character over the past 900 years. Simply admiring our hazy golden Belgian-style Tripel in your wide-rimmed glass doesn't even begin to reveal its complexity. The spicy aroma that streams upward with hints of wild flower honey and orange blossom is your first clue of the depth of St. Vrain Tripel. The sweetness from the malt makes itself known immediately, progressing to bittersweet honey and dried fruit flavors, and finishing out with the lingering earthiness from the Styrian Golding hops. The warming effect of the 9% ABV is your final indication that the initial simplicity masks St. Vrain's beautiful intricacy.

2009 750 ml. bottle. a lifeless clear gold with no head and hardly any bubbles. creamed corn, vanilla, eucalyptus aroma. watery palate. flavors of minty hops and sweet corny grainy malts. maybe a little banana/bubblegum touch. mostly disappointing.

2009 Bottle. Pours clear, pale-golden, with a thin white head, good lasting lacing. Aroma of bubble-gum, caramel, banana, citrus and hay. Light bodied, low carbonation. Bread and bubble-gum flavor, with some apple, caramel and spicy undertones, lightly tart and bitter citrus finish. On the sweet side and a little thin for the style.

Banana and clove aromas, sweet malts also on the nose. Pours very light blonde. Fruity malty flavors, sweet banana, sweet citrus, some clove and cardamom. It does lack a little complexity and if it weren’t for the bit of spices from the yeast it would be very sugary.

From the bottle poured carefully, clear and pale golden with quick, thin white effervescence. It smells of dried fruits, apricots, alcohol and peppery notes. The mouthfeel is crazy thin. Not quite as sweet as some other tripels. It won’t stand up to warming and no "best by" date. Kind of disappointed by this one.

A bit disappointing overall. Aroma is fairly typically of a tripel. Light notes of spice, hints of honey, candy sugar and fruit. Flavor has notes of herbal grass, lemon, orange rind, coriander, honey, etc. Mouthfeel is under carbonated, at least for a tripel. Overall, the combination of low carbonation and weak aroma/flavor left this one lacking.
