| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 27, 2008 Pours a deep garnet color with a moderately full, tan, creamy, mostly lasting head which leaves tight, but limited lace. Nose is faint; some dark rye husks, light bread crust, a bit of spiciness, and some chocolate in the background. Flavor is much more pronounced; lots of chocolate (bitter and some milk), nice coffee notes (although only lightly roasted), some roasted dark rye husks, toasted dark bread, and some spicy, smoky, nutty tones. Bitterness was more than moderate, but more from the coffee and rye notes than the hops. Palate is a surprise with a full, slightly syrupy, soft to lively, and drying; for a lager and a schwarzbier, quite full and syrupy instead of medium and crisp but intriguing. Finishes somewhat dry with lots of bitter chocolate, dry coffee, and spicy dark rye notes. Not what I would consider a Schwarzbier at all but definitely interesting with the fuller body and the great appearance. The spicy rye notes really complement the bitter chocolate and lightly roasted coffee notes. An interesting collaboration but the drinkability was limited. kiefdog (1629), Tampa, Florida, USA
