22oz from Sam’s, Durham. Fairly nice pour, deep brown and with an appealing two-finger head. Aroma is richly spicy, with rye notes blending together with some dry roasts and malts. Slightly leafy quality to the taste, but perhaps that’s just the bitters in there, and there’s a mild fruity quality deep in there too. The rye isn’t too prominent, I suppose, and I agree with others who feel this resembles a dry stout on some level. But it’s enjoyable, whatever we decide to call it.

Bottle shared by Ethan. Thanks. Pours like dark brown cola with a small tan head that fades fast. Nose is seriously lacking with some minor rye maybe. Metalic and astringent flavor with a slightly silky mouthfeel. Pretty disappointing overall. I ike rye beers, this is not good though.

22oz bomber. Pours a deep, dark, red-brown with magnificent highlights of deep, dark, mahogany and ruby. The head pours thick and light tan in color, fluffy and pillowy. It fades slowly leaving large sheets of lace on the glass. The aroma is chocolate, subtle hops, bready/grainy (pilsner malt), caramel, and lager yeast. The flavor starts bittersweet with some chocolate, a lot of spicy rye, roasted grain like burnt toast, mild caramel sweetness, and fruity hop flavor (grapefruit peel). At mid-palate the flavors are strong with rye, chocolate, and a nice balancing bitterness (noble hops?). The finish is mostly dry with a firm hop bitterness and some roasted flavors like bitter cocoa. The aftertaste is a blend of continental pilsner malt and coffee. The mouthfeel is crisp, medium-full in body, and creamy. Overall - a fantastic schwarzbier that is just beautiful in all aspects. I need to go buy a case of this stuff!

This poured a dark brown color with a beige head. The aroma contains some rye along with some chocolate and marshmellows. The flavor contains rye, chocolate, caramel, and oddly more marshmellows. The finish is a mixture of sourness but more sweet than anything. Overall an different and pretty good beer.

decaturstevo’s 2008 Zapit Tasing Tasting. Sample from a bottle thanks to Butters/SpringsLicker. Dark black with lots of red hints, thin tan head. Burnt roasty malt aroma, some rye breadiness and peppery spice. Taste is rye bread, more strong spiciness and burnt/roasted dry rye malt.

I just must not like rye. I have yet to have a rye beer that i’ve actually liked. Pours a dark brown with some tan head Aroma is wierd, a twinge of alcohol, slightly vegetal, and very earthy dark malt. (is that what rye smells like?) Flavor is burnt, almost like dirt. Bitterish finish, but not lingering. Not my thing.

Pours thick with a hazy brown coming out of the bottle. Carbonation is good creating a thick tight tan head. Aroma is roasted with a faint smoke scent and a hint of alcohol. Taste is rich and bitter. Starting with a bold/medium body it goes down smooth with a rich feel. Finish is a quick roasted flavor then a hint of hops and a bold bitterness. After taste is more bitterness. Its not bad, but not very complex the bitterness seems to dominate.

Draft. Deep brown, nearly black but there’s some tawny brown hues at the very bottom of the glass. Roast and heavy toasted black malt, burnt brown sugar, dry pipe tobacco and a light note of bourbon - honestly tastes much better than I expected. The nose is more of a simple toasted barley and straightforward rye, not as rich or complex as it is on the tongue, but overall it’s surprisingly good, could fool me into thinking it’s a foreign stout
