An opaque body that was so velvety and silky, I can’t even remember drinking a beer with such a texture. The huge addition of rye added a stunning spicy complexity that gave this beer the depth of time & space. Chocolaty, spicy, hints of coffee and toffee, with a tangerine hoppyness… an Outstanding drinking experience. BeerFanDan17 (618), Land O Lakes, Florida, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Dec 24, 2008 A very unique and tasty brew. A blend of the milk stout and ale. Almost a scotch ale, but much darker. Malt, chocolate, and coffee are evident and hops are present but balanced. Really exquisite. lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA

Smell is lightly nutty, rye bread and coffee. Taste is dark, roasty rye, zesty and hoppy with a light coffee touch and perhaps the faintest touch of lager yeast. Rich, lightly syrupy body and refreshing carbonation. Perfect mouthfeel and lasting hoppiness and bitterness make this a really under rated beer in my book. nqualls (1429), Nashville, Tennessee, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 9, 2008 650 mL bottle. Poured a thick ruby black with a one finger brown head. Aroma of roasted malt and pancake syrup. Flavor was spicy with chocolate and caramel notes and a citrus hop note. Very different beer. Both Left Hand and Terrapin can pat themselves on the back for this one. Great effort. kkearn (1002), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

Nice aroma of cocoa, rye, caramel, chocolate, and coffee. flavor is rye, chocolate, spice, coffee, earth, and mild hops. Very smooth and easy to drink. Long, fairly bitter finish with hops and rye. Great beer. DrBayern (1136), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 12, 2009 22 oz. bottle. Deep, ruby black pour with a slowly developing, creamy, tawny head that has excellent durability and a sticky, reticulated lace, a truly beautiful beer. Aroma of roasted nuts, faint burnt sugar, pine, and spice. Medium body and carbonation, smooth and dry palate. A big dose of hoppy bitterness washes over the malty sweetness that hits first. The finish is long and bitter, and quite satisfying. I really liked this. jhumphries69 (726), Tyrone, Georgia, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 18, 2008 22oz bomber. Pours a deep, dark, red-brown with magnificent highlights of deep, dark, mahogany and ruby. The head pours thick and light tan in color, fluffy and pillowy. It fades slowly leaving large sheets of lace on the glass. The aroma is chocolate, subtle hops, bready/grainy (pilsner malt), caramel, and lager yeast. The flavor starts bittersweet with some chocolate, a lot of spicy rye, roasted grain like burnt toast, mild caramel sweetness, and fruity hop flavor (grapefruit peel). At mid-palate the flavors are strong with rye, chocolate, and a nice balancing bitterness (noble hops?). The finish is mostly dry with a firm hop bitterness and some roasted flavors like bitter cocoa. The aftertaste is a blend of continental pilsner malt and coffee. The mouthfeel is crisp, medium-full in body, and creamy. Overall - a fantastic schwarzbier that is just beautiful in all aspects. I need to go buy a case of this stuff! nearbeer (1834), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA

Translucent deep chestnut with a half-inch head that lasts and leaves Swiss cheese lacing behind. Aroma of peppery rye bread, molasses and light licorice. Flavor is similar with some fresh herb-hops peeking through as well. Nice bittersweet charry finish. Heavy body is smooth, peppery-tingly and roasty dry. Damn fine lager.
