Commercial Description:
This English-style Barleywine is fermented and aged for ten months and dry hopped for two months prior to packaging to give it a smooth mouth feel rarely found in the bitter American barleywines. Its copper color is the result of twelve house of boiling to caramelize the sugars and we also add five varieties of hops during an additional two hour boil. As you can see and taste, we brew this beer with the highest level of quality in mind. Please enjoy this warming barleywine with its warming flavors and hint of peat very responsibly. Malts: Pale, Crystal, Peated. Hops: Magnum, Centennial, Northern Brewer, Cascade, Tettnanger, East Kent Goldings, Fuggles. 70 IBUs.

I’m a fan of this. The aroma isn’t real strong, but the taste is nice and smooth. Not verystrong in the alcohol, but sweet and good. A little too expensive, but nice.

(Bottle, 2003) Pours clear amber. Dried fruits and hops in aroma with powder sugar and some allmond paste. Sugary malt with some toffee tones. Hints of boiled eggs, violet and pepper.Hoppy, sugary, caramel-ish flavour with a syrupy body. Small to medium bitterness. A bit salty and some crispbread. Pretty smooth mouthfeel with spicy hints.

12/02/06 Walk the Line Barleywine Festival, Dunedin, FL. 2003 vintage. Clear orange looking color with thin white head. Very light aroma of sweet malts. I couldn’t make out much else. Nice smooth sweet caramel and citrus hop flavor. A more pronounced aroma and this one would be very nice indeed.

04 bottle. copper pour with two fingers of a milkshake style head that fades to almost nothing. citrus hops, rich caramel malts, sugar, alcohol, very faint pumpkin, and oak in the aroma. nice palate of citrus hops and caramel malts that give way to sugar and a bitter finish. creamy mouth. apple, smoked wood tones. body is a little watery and sugar too dominant. alcohol warming. enjoyable.

Pours a lsightly cloudy amber with a spotty patchy thin film of a head. aroma is sweet caramel, fruity esters and a slight alcohol burn in the nose. Sticky sweet caramel malts, hoppy flavor with a bit more alcohol and light hints of smoke and tobacco. Finishes a bit astringent and the body is a bit weak for a barleywine.

This pours a clear caramel/amber body with a slender, bubbly head. It has the sweet malty nose of toffee with a touch of butterscotch, juicy fruits - both citric and stoned, a whiff of alcohol, and hints of smoke. There’s a strong enough hop bitterness to counter the sweetness, but the flavor is dominated by the sweet malts and fruits, the alcohol lurking beneath the surface, ready to make itself known as soon as the swallow clears the throat. The finish is sticky sweet with some smoke added, perhaps from the low alcohol burn. Dangerously drinkable.

03 bottle provided by Eyedrinkale (thanks Mike) at the last (supposedly) Heavyweight Open House. Poured into a small tasting glass. Poured with lots of floaties. Color is orangish-amber. Strong aroma - malty with orange-like citrus hints. Taste is very original - definite tangerine flavors really coming through a subdued barleywine sweetness. Nice.

Pours a two finger cream head that fades quickly leaving a trace of lace. Clear amber color with massive chucky bits in bottom of glass. Light carbonation and medium-heavy bodied. Slight raisin nose. Complex flavor, sweet malt, some smokiness, some whiskey, no real bitterness, the high ABV is not apparent. Clean finish. Pricey at $12.19 for a 750ml bottle from Blue Max Liquor Burnsville, Mn.
