Commercial Description:
This English-style Barleywine is fermented and aged for ten months and dry hopped for two months prior to packaging to give it a smooth mouth feel rarely found in the bitter American barleywines. Its copper color is the result of twelve house of boiling to caramelize the sugars and we also add five varieties of hops during an additional two hour boil. As you can see and taste, we brew this beer with the highest level of quality in mind. Please enjoy this warming barleywine with its warming flavors and hint of peat very responsibly. Malts: Pale, Crystal, Peated. Hops: Magnum, Centennial, Northern Brewer, Cascade, Tettnanger, East Kent Goldings, Fuggles. 70 IBUs.

Pours a golden hue with a halo of a white head. Aromas of oak, apples, and a little spice. Flavors of tobbacco, spice, medium bodied with a hint of maple.

Murky orange ale with a small, fizzy, off-white head. The nose is of wood, citrus fruit, caramel and toffee. The flavor is very well-balanced with notes of toffee, butterscotch, straw and orange peel. Medum to full-bodied and fizzy. Short, astringent, dry finish. It’s not extremely complex, but quite enjoyable and warming. Pretty much congruent with the style. Overpriced (and maybe a tad overhopped for balance), but a bit underrated as I think most of us have forgotten how an English barleywine was originally intended to smell, feel and taste. I think a lot of us try to compare many styles of beer to the complexities of trappist ales.

(750ml bottle) Particles suspend in a hazy amber solution topped by a big beige head. Aroma is sweet, grapefruit, herbal, some caramel, light alcohol. Taste is quite sweet, grapefruit, caramel, some herbal, orange, light alcohol. Medium body, definitely light for the style, moderate resin. Alcohol fairly well disguised. The coherence of the beer falls apart somewhat at room temperature, so best drink it quick (easier said than done in 750 size) or with a friend.

Orange-red. Nose is lightly fruity, lots of honey sweetness, a bit of cola as well. Flavor is quite fruity, lots of apples and oranges and very apricot-ish, bit yeasty. Overly sweet, bit puckering. Somewhat astringent at the end, a bit harsh. Decent, but just not that complex, really.

Tasted at the 2004 Pizza Port Strong Ale Fest. Light orange gold color. Medium sized white foamy head. Aroma is sweet with caramel and honey notes. A medium to full bodied barley wine. Malts are fruity and sweet. Hops are slightly spicy, and slightly bitter. Touches of orange and spice. Very smooth tasting. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet. Thanks Dr Bill.

Bottled. Reddened copper body with a small light tan head. Aroma is light hops, fruit and light honey. Faint malt sweetness as well. Taste is slightly bittersweet, light honey, caramel, some fruit (citrus), and light alcohol. Body is medium with light alcohol warming. Finish is light alcohol, light hops, malt sweentess and a hint of caramel. Very smooth barleywine. It’s almost as if it has already been aged a year or so.

Yet another Dr. Bill surprise at the Pizza Port Strong Ale Festival. Poured a golden orange w/ good head and lacing. Soury fermented fruit w/ honey and caramel notes on the nose. Strong fermented fruit and caramel apples on the mouth.

Brought to us by Dr. Bill at the Pizza Port Strong Ale Fest. This barley wine pours with a golden orange body topped by a thick head with good lacing. The aroma and flavor are slighlty sweet yet bitter with slight caramel notes and a slight bitterness. Medium to full bodied, slightly smooth and dry.
