Commercial Description:
This English-style Barleywine is fermented and aged for ten months and dry hopped for two months prior to packaging to give it a smooth mouth feel rarely found in the bitter American barleywines. Its copper color is the result of twelve house of boiling to caramelize the sugars and we also add five varieties of hops during an additional two hour boil. As you can see and taste, we brew this beer with the highest level of quality in mind. Please enjoy this warming barleywine with its warming flavors and hint of peat very responsibly. Malts: Pale, Crystal, Peated. Hops: Magnum, Centennial, Northern Brewer, Cascade, Tettnanger, East Kent Goldings, Fuggles. 70 IBUs.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy, reddish-brown body with a thin, white head. Smell: Aroma smelling of sugar, caramel, and fragrant, spicy hops. Taste: Vaguely caramel malt character, but plenty of sugary sweetness. There’s citrusy, spicy hop flavors. Light alcohol in bitter finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Drinkability: It doesn’t seem so bad, but it is a bit of a letdown.

Bottle. Average creamy off-white head that mostly diminished. Fair lacing. Clear flat body with an amber golden color. Aroma of cookie, caramel, grain, nutty, rye bread and a good portion of burned malty notes as well. Light floral notes with some raisin and almost port wine like notes as well. Full bodied with an average carbonation and alcoholic texture. Well balanced moderated sweet and bitter flavor. Quit nice and sweet lingering finish.

2002 Vintage... Another surprise bottle (3 bottles actually!) shared by Tmoney99 at the Cincinnati RateBeer Gathering on 3/23/2007 at Dilly Deli. Thank you so much! This is especially exciting since I just recently had the Oak-Aged Widdershin’s...

Left Hand Widdershin’s Barleywine Style Ale pours a murky brownish-ruby/amber color with a diminishing off-white head. The aroma has some caramel malt, apple, and muted hops. Sweet caramel and toffee flavored malt is accompanied by some apple and pear in the taste. Due to the age, the alcohol is only mildly noticeable and a nice oxidized/woddy "petina" (thanks for the great description jsquire!) has formed that accentuates and adds nicely to the overall flavor depth and complexity of this beer. At this point, the carbonation level was pretty low/mild, so this beer was very smooth and soft in the mouth. There was a little beer left in one of the bottles, so I swirled it around to mix up some of the yeast from the bottom and added it to my glass toward the end. This slurry seemed to help all the flavors meld together even more and lended a creamy smoothness to the soft and mellow palate. Overall, Left Hand Widdershin’s is a solid barleywine that ages very nicely...

750 ml corked and caged bottle shared by Tmoney99 on 3/23/2007.
