Courtesy GofOfThunder. Pours a lightly hazy, dark golden-orange color. A small, foamy, off-white head leaves wet, soapy legging and micro-spots of lace. The aroma is straightforward, with big, sweet caramel and toffee malts accompanied by bitter orange and grapefruit hops. Flavors follow suit, leaning towards the sweet side initially as the toffee exerts itself. Towards the back end, the citrus hop bitterness really starts to charge through. A substantial, syrupy mouthfeel ends with a bit of unfortunate astringency. Not bad, overall, but nothing to get excited about.

Beer tasted at mcbackus tasting. Pours deep gold to orange with thin off white head. The aroma has pretty full citrus grapefruit and orange citrus hops. The taste is up front citrus hop bitterness and milder late addition hop flavor with orange and even semi sweet grapefruit. Deep in the back is mild sweet maltiness. It ends with increasing citrus hop bitterness including a tangy tangelo note. Solid brew but only an average IIPA really.

22 oz. bottle. Pours a pale copper with a light-tan head. Well-balanced aroma with some resiny hops along with some sweet caramel. Medium-bodied. Nice balance taste-wise too. A good bit of sweet caramel upfront. Finishes with an ample amount of bitter, grapefruity hoppy goodness. A solid session brew.

Tasting at the McBackus Backyard Bash. Thanks to GodofThunder for the taste. Slightly cloudy gold pour. Big earthy hop aroma with a good malt balance. Clean crisp malt taste with a big bitter hop bite. Solid DIPA.

Bottle... Backus’s Backdoor Bash ‘08... Murky golden ale with a small, fat-bubbled, white head. Earthy, resiny aroma provides hints of grapefruit and pine. Full-bodied with a velvety mouthfeel and tingly carbonation. Tilts wayyy over toward the bitter side of balance. A bit salty and a touch sweet, but the bitterness really kicks ass. Lengthy, bitter finish that kind of sweetens out, but not entirely. Thanks to GodOfThunder for sharing his bottle!

A bomb of bitter hop flavor went off in my mouth. Not really sweet, but ultra-bitter. It is a good beer, but not a whole lot of balance going on. A little malt on the back end tries to even things out, but the bitter hops win.

Good beer. Amber pour. Floral, citrus hops and malt on the nose. Flavor is malty and hoppy. Juicy hops with a good backbone of malts. Not bad. Not Pliny either!!!

A pretty good IIPA, but nothing out of this world. Aroma is a little weak. I did like the clean, crisp finish though, not sticky or bitter at all. Flavor is what you’d expect from an IIPA, if a little weak. Nice malt balance, and some notes of yeast. Pretty good.
