Shadrach (176), Brooklyn, New York, USA Dec 9, 2003 Appearance is a semi-opaque nice mix of caramel, amber, with some hints of orange and yellow. Has a minmal head and a lsight aroma of citrus. It starts out with a moderate hoppy taste with a bit of bitterness and then finishes smoothly with a minimal aftertaste of citrus hops. I had this beer with an order of lamb medallions with garlic mashed potatoes and the flavor opened up to include some caramel and chocolate overtones. One of my new favorites. Good solid strong ale. JF_GRIND (1218), Glenside, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 25, 2005 It’s only fitting I sampled this beer while Mother Nature was dumping 10 plus inches of snow on Philadelphia. Full Belgian yeasty aroma, but poured on the flat side. Chocolate malts, oatmeal and a yeasty twang are all upfront in the flavor of this Chalice beer. Nor’easter has a split personality of an oatmeal stout and a Belgian Strong Ale. Unique flavor, definitely worth sampling. Dickinsonbeer (2550), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Oct 22, 2006 Seems as though this style has changed over the years. This year is an amped up oatmeal stout. Pours a very dark black with a really nice deep tan/orangy head which lasts. Aroma is sharp roasted barley- coffee hints, slight burnt malts, some chocolate and a nice light sweetness. Flavor is slightly sweet, but overalll is fairly bitter due to the large amounts of burnt and roasted malts. Great coffee and roast flavor with chocolate nuts, light dried fruits and some caramel malt sweetness. Good full body for the abv. Nice stout! hopscotch (4588), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Dec 7, 2006 Draft... Listed as Legacy Nor’easter Robust Oatmeal Stout... GBOA ’06... Pitch black ale with burnt orange around the edges when held up to light. Mid-sized, creamy, light brown head with excellent retention. Lots of coffee and chocolate with a little vanilla and smoke in the aroma. Very decently balanced, although it leans slightly onto the bitter and burnt side with dark chocolate and coffee grounds. Barely medium-bodied with a milky mouthfeel and modest carbonation. Tangy, burnt, bitter finish. RblWthACoz (959), Brooklyn, New York, USA Feb 12, 2008 Pours black with a tan head that rises off a firm pour and falls fairly quickly, though leaves a fair amount of lace. Nose is strong with malts and loads of oats. Something kind of spicy about it as well. This is almost like a nice oat muffin under your nose. Flavor is nice and hearty. Bitter back side that stays minor enough. Feel is nice on the carbonation with it being nice and smooth. Liquid is good too, but just a touch thin. Very easy to drink. A tasty stout.
