20080329 Blind tasting notes and score from Cornboy 2nd annual Barleywine Extravaganza. 2007 edition. Well, my two least favorite beers of the day back to back and both of them were diacetyl bombs. This one paired nasty butterscotch notes with tangy, metallic flavors and some too sweet finishing fruits. Seriously disappointing. It is amazing how quickly diacetyl can ruin a beer for me, and how others can seem to not notice it at all.

Although most aren’t impressed by this barleywine, I found it to be rather pleasant.

Tasting at the McBackus Backyard Bash. Thanks to Immy for the taste! Dark amber pour. Caramel apple sweet malt taste. Bitter hoppy with a sweet malt balance in the taste. Finishes bitter, might need a little more aging to smooth out a bit.

Sampled @ Backus’s Backdoor Bash.Courtesy of Immy.Poured a dark amber with a sweet nose. The flavor was not as sweet, it had your dark fruits but the alcohol killed it.Finished off semi sweet and dry.

Bottle courtesy of the funess that was Backus’s Backdoor Bash ‘08. Courtesy of Immy, who brought it for Dragonstout, so thanks to both of you! 2007 vintage. Aroma was prett much alcohol and some fruit. Flavor was overpowed by the alchol, and was a bit dry to me. I definitely prefer a sweeter barley wine. This one was off balanced.

Thanks to whomever brought this to the Backus Backyard Bash! Pours a thick dark brown with a little red tint. The alcohol is a little overpowering, taking over the figs, dates and other dried fruits you’re used to tasting in a barleywine. This is a tough one and the alcohol level isn’t very balanced with the other flavors. Not terrible, and maybe needed a little longer to age and mellow out.

Tasting at mcbackus 10/19. Reddish brown. Sweet, dark fruit aroma. Alcohol is all over the aroma and the tongue. Harsh and really not very good. Overrated BW.
