Commercial Description:
The brewers of Legend are proud to bring you our latest seasonal offering, Legend British Mild Ale. This “session” beer is a light bodied and quaffable ale geared towards the drinker who is looking for a low alcohol beer, but still appreciates good flavor. Is this “Legend Light”? Well, not really as it comes in at around 4% alcohol by volume. It is, however, a less aggressive brew that will neither bloat the belly nor cloud the head. This subtle ale is not at all a complicated beer. Delicacy calls for simplification of ingredients. Three malts, one hop, and one yeast were used, that’s all. We began with a unique and very charismatic British yeast strain that is responsible for the predominance of flavor and aroma. The malts are Pale Malt and Belgian Biscuit Malt, with a touch of Chocolate Malt. The lone hop is British Perle. Look for a light tan color, not quite as reddish brown as a Dark Mild Ale. The aroma is fruity (pears, cider) with a hint of hop spiciness. The palate is lean, emphasizing toasty malt flavors blended with fruity esters. The finish is dry.

This is an outstanding session ale from an outstanding small brewery. The good folks at Legend have done an excellent job of recreating a classic English style with this one. Understatement, balance, and harmony are apt descriptors. Unfortunately, it’s a seasonal offering and (at the moment) a limited release -- from a brewery with limited distribution. A visit to the brewpub on the James River will not be a waste of time, though, rest assured.

On tap at the brewpub. Clear, dark gold with a small white head. Light, sweet malt nose, weak caramel and a hint of grass. Flavor is more of the same, a light breadiness is added. Finishes with light grass and floral. Yup, it’s a mild.

Draft at Legend. Amber bodied. Small white head. Nose is light malts, faint caramel, and flowery hops. I also picked up some metal in the aroma, maybe iron. That happened towards the end of the pint, though. Taste is creamy malts, light fruit, soft yeast, and some buttery notes. There’s also more light floral hops. Body is light, but chewy. I mild carbonation throughout. Finishes with caramel, buttery malts and more floral hops.

Draft at pub, glad they decided to throw out a mild! Copper appearance, little head. Very, very faint caramel aroma. Light bodied, flavor was of light caramel and decent hop bitterness on the finish, leaning towards spicy. Nice session beer, which is what it was supposed to be. Perhaps a tad more carbonation than needed, but enjoyable.

On tap at the brewery. Copper pour with thin white head. Nose was barely perceptible, even after it warmed, with a hint of sour malt. Flavor has more of the sour malt with a bit of fruitiness. On the thin side, but pretty sure that the point.

It pours an amber color with a thin white head. Strawberry and banana scents are evident in the aroma. This is a very smooth, slightly creamy, and lightly bitter ale. It has a fruity flavor and a slightly nutty after-taste.

Tap at Legend Brewing -- A nice ruby-orange body with a thin white head. Good aroma, light caramel, honey, fruit and some malts. Great taste for the style, light hops, some wheat and a light fruit presence. Pleasent ending. If one wants to try a Mild Ale, this is a perfect example of what the style is suppose to be.
