Commercial Description:
Due to explosive sales of this year’s Oktoberfest, we’ll be releasing Legend Chocolate Porter a little earlier than normal. We tweaked the recipe this year by adding some additional dark malts to the mash. A touch of natural cocoa extract is added to the finished beer for a rich, robust Porter with plenty of roasted, coffee, and of course, chocolate flavors. Always a favorite during the holiday season.

22oz bottle acquired in trade with The_Beer_God (thanks!). Poured a dark, dark brown with a large sized tan head. Aromas of roasted malts, vanilla, light coffee and very light chocolate. Tastes of roasted malts, some chocolate, nuts and coffee. For a beer named ’Chocolate Porter’ I expected more of a chocolate presence.

22oz bottle-pours a rich cascading to rocky brown head and black color. Aroma is earthy, chocolate-dark malt. Taste is earthy hops first then chocolate/molasses/anise-dark malt/oat, ashy, and something medicinal-like.

Bottle... Pitch black ale with a small, fizzy, lightly tanned head. The aroma has a lot going on... butterscotch, toasted nuts, buttered toast (God, I love diacetyl), milk chocolate and dark roasted caramel malt. Well-balanced flavor with light bitterness and a whisper of cocoa. Doesn’t quite deliver on the nose’s promise. A little thin for the style. Medium-bodied and creamy with soft carbonation. Finishes creamy and mildly sweet. Better than expected. Underrated! Thanks go out to growler for the bomber.

Bottle shared by cdog69 on 2/1/08: Pours an opaque with a small creamy dark tan head. Aroma of rich milk chocolate and butterscotch with some cocoa powder and paper. Starts oily and semi-sweet with some milk chocolate and earthy cocoa powder with plenty of diacetyl. Drier finish has some roasted notes. If they could clean up the diacetyl this would be quite nice.

My Bottom Line:
High-flying cocoa dominates this slender Porter, as roasted malts and leafy hops agreeably reach equilibrium underneath. This was a fun and sweet novelty beer, but I can’t say it struck a cord with me.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam covers the blackness.
-There is less chocolate in the flavor department, but this flavor profile wasn’t more enticing by any means.
-This would be a fine pint to accompany some desserts.
-The finish was more of the same, some chocolate and some light roastiness.

On tap at The Green Leafe Café in Williamsburg, VA.

Very deep dark beer. Rich aroma of soy, treacle and heavy cocoa with an earthy/dusty aroma. Meaty broth and rich sweet dusty character. Chewy and dusty. Smells and tastes like vegemite. Chalky and chewy and fairly leathery. Strange brew.
