Commercial Description:
The term “liquid bread” likely refers to this style of beer, as it traces its origins to German monks who made strong, full bodied brews to be consumed in place of solid food during Lent. Malt flavors shine in a Doppelbock, and hops take the back seat here. Our version makes use of Vienna and Bonlander Munich malts as the base, also incorporating Munich 20, Cara-Munich, Breiss Aromatic, and Chocolate malts for a hefty, toasty beer in flavor and aroma. Expect a deep amber color, a rich malty aroma, and a complex flavor that truly celebrates malted barley and it’s various forms. Look for plenty of biscuity and bready flavors, accented by caramelized sweetness, finishing smooth and mellow with hints of chocolate. Hops are used only for a counter to the malt sweetness. We used Tettenang hops for bitterness and Hallertau for flavor. No aroma hops were added. This beer was fermented on White Labs Southern German Lager yeast, which is richer in flavor and aromatics than our house lager yeast. Original Gravity: 18 Balling, Final Gravity 4.5 Balling. 24 IBUs (low hop bitterness and aroma)

2007 and before - 7% ABV

2008 - 8% ABV

Nice deep brown coloured body with a thinnish tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, nuts, cherries, grapes and a light brown sugar. Medium-bodied; Strong potent nuttiness and caramel malt flavours along with some of the sweetness and even more of the nutty flavours. Aftertaste shows more malt, nuts and some deep pit fruit sweetness. Overall, a decent beer - tastes mostly like an ale - but still worth trying. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Norm’s Beer & Wine in Vienna, Virginia on 21-April-2007 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Nose is full of doughy dusted malted milk balls and bread crust. Creamy and moderately thick, biting a little bit, with a coarse texture and granola and cereal grain flavor, light smoke and light charred oats. A decent doppelbock, better than I was expecting after seeing the previous ratings.

22 oz. bottle. Pours a dark, ruby-brown with a tan head. Aromas of caramel, bourbon, vanilla bean, and raisins. Nutty malt flavors along with caramel, raisin, and a little hop bitterness. A solid and tastey doppelbock.

From bomber. 2007 Vintage. Clear, dark, coppery brown with a beige head. Nose is toasty malt, caramel, bread and a very mild, grassy hop note. Smooth and medium bodied, with flavors of bread, caramel, toasty malt, mild nut and some dark fruit notes. OK.

Thanks to Numenor for this one. Pours with a deep garnet- tinged brown body that creates a large tan head that persists for quite a while before slipping to join the beer below. Toasty caramel aroma with almost a burnt or smoky note to it. Smooth mouthfeel with a body that is a bit light. Light sweet malt flavor. Not as complex as I would like. A bit reserved and one dimensional, but easy drinking and tasty nevertheless. This would be a fantastic brown ale.

Brown color with a whispy thin head of tiny white bubbles. Aroma is very mild. Slightly malty and slightly smokey. Very mild flavor but the body is nice and its easy to drink.

Foamed out of the bottle. Poured a clear deep mahogany color with a meidum beige head. Fruity aroma with prunes, raisins and a touch of smoke. Fruity malt that is pretty short and a dry finish.
