Commercial Description:
The term “liquid bread” likely refers to this style of beer, as it traces its origins to German monks who made strong, full bodied brews to be consumed in place of solid food during Lent. Malt flavors shine in a Doppelbock, and hops take the back seat here. Our version makes use of Vienna and Bonlander Munich malts as the base, also incorporating Munich 20, Cara-Munich, Breiss Aromatic, and Chocolate malts for a hefty, toasty beer in flavor and aroma. Expect a deep amber color, a rich malty aroma, and a complex flavor that truly celebrates malted barley and it’s various forms. Look for plenty of biscuity and bready flavors, accented by caramelized sweetness, finishing smooth and mellow with hints of chocolate. Hops are used only for a counter to the malt sweetness. We used Tettenang hops for bitterness and Hallertau for flavor. No aroma hops were added. This beer was fermented on White Labs Southern German Lager yeast, which is richer in flavor and aromatics than our house lager yeast. Original Gravity: 18 Balling, Final Gravity 4.5 Balling. 24 IBUs (low hop bitterness and aroma)

2007 and before - 7% ABV

2008 - 8% ABV

22 oz. bottle. Dark brown color, small head. Hop flavor, with some maltiness. Very smooth with a nice aftertaste.

Subdued floral hops, and esters of melon, tropical fruits and musty honey are overpowered by strong butterscotch diacetyl. Once the diacetyl blows off somewhat, the aroma is quite papery and oxidized. Clear copper coloured body is topped by a low white head that recedes to ring. Ashy tomatoes, burnt charcoal with some butter and tropical fruit tanginess in the unpleasant flavour. Watery texture. No carbonation. A bad bottle for certain and definitely a disappointment when it has travelled so far. Bottle (trade, Aug-05) sampled with MartinT, Rastacouere and Siroy. Thanks, Kinz!

Clear dark brown color with a thin light brown head. Caramel malt aroma with some fruit and astringentness. Dark malt flavor with a bit of sugar and stale chocolate.

Great ruby-brown body. Very little head, though what there is is tan. Light hops and malts in the aroma, some bread-like accents. Nice smooth, clean taste. Clean and sharp taste.

[ Bottled ; chilled ; about 2 years old ]
A fully diminishing small fizzy tan head tops up a hazy light amber body. No lacing. Few thin particles. No bubbles. Aroma is obscured by acidic fruitiness in an unpleasant way. Evil tomatoes are rushing to you to scuff your nostrils! Sugary. thin body... watery texture... Flat carbonation. yerk.
Bottle being old, rated to current average. (just to remember that i had it and i really dont want more!)

Hazy dulled river water orange, headless. Buttery, strong honeymelon and watermelon, tomatoes and other fruits make for an unexpected start. Ropey pedioccocus bring a lightly tart character that grows acetic and fruit oriented in mouth. Residual sweetness nevertheless present in the shape of brown sugar crystals. Light bodied, weak carbonation, insanely thin. Hugely disappointing and barely drinkable at this point.

Any first impressions?
-A ring of head surrounds the muddled mahogany.
-A tropical fruit salad clashes with the sugary cocoa powder.
-Uncanny tartness, pickle juice, and melon fruitiness are catastrophic signs of beery apocalypse.
-May have something to do with the growing wilderness, but the mouthfeel appears thin for the style.

What if you dig deeper?
-Black pepper rises in the nose.
-There is a lot of bustling fruitiness, but it is sadly diseased.
-Something like this doesn’t deserve to be analyzed further, by the consumer anyway.
-Even if this bottle were over 2 years old, a doppelbock shouldn’t deteriorate like this.

Bottle; no date.

Cranerry colored body with dark spots, very thin white head is gone in no time. Smell is lger hops, cocoa and sour cherries. Taste is vegetable-like, rooty, stalky, evensimilar to dried marijuana, along with some burnt sugars, some sourness via cherries. Aftertaste is a little dry, lager like qualities.
